When Your Car Goes Boom... Blame Formula 14!

Return of Muller-not as in the rice, but as in the creepy German doctor who last popped up in 'The Black Island'. This adventure, although not a personal favourite (the Captain doesn't make a proper appearance until page 53) is well-paced and written, and introduces both the sentimental but ruthless emir and, more importantly, his horrible little son, Abdullah ("Waaah! I want to stay with Blistering Barnacles!") The whole mirage sequence is fab, and I love Olivera's efforts to keep everyone occupied by telling farfetched stories ('"Aha!" cried the Count, in Portugese..') It's a pity that Muller only makes one other appearance (Red Sea Sharks), since I kind of like him. Ah, well.

    Well-woven plot

The petrol is being infused with an invisible additive and causing blowups all over the place. This book begins with the blundering Thomsons attempting to be professional and profound and failing utterly. Tintin, Thomson and Thompson all head for the city of Khemikal on a ship together, then are separated and reunite after a long and amusing sequence of events. Dr Muller of 'The Black Island' infamy returns in this tale as the culprit behind the petrol disaster.
