Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This oversized volume is the companion to the recent PBS series. While many of the photographs are stunning, the book simply covers too much ground in too few pages. What works on TV does not work as well in print. Peck tells a good story. He takes the reader on a natural history journey across North America, beginning with the first white settlers on the Virginia coast in the early 17th century. Much of this is fascinating, but too much of it is so hurriedly told that the reader is left without a great deal of detail. For larger public libraries with active natural history collections.-- Randy Dykhuis, OCLC, Dublin, Ohio
School Library Journal
YA-- A visually exciting natural history, with a unique emphasis on the relationship between the geography and history of the continent. Written as a companion piece to the PBS series,``Land of the Eagle,'' this work can stand alone. Unlike most coffee-table fare, Peck's text is informative and poetically engaging, rife with primary sources and quotes, and accompanied by superb full-color photographs and maps. Each chapter highlights a different land region, its natural landscape, wildlife, and the effects of human history on the land. YAs with an interest in American history, geography, geology, and zoology will appreciate the skillful intermingling of historical figures responding to the terrain and ecology of each region.-- Carol Beall, Immanuel Christian School, Springfield, VA

Describes the American wilderness, capturing the excitement, hope, and awe this vast land instilled in all who encountered it, and examines the dramatic changes European settlers effected on the continent, some good and others with longlasting, traumatic consequences for the native populations.
