Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Danielle Williams
Hip-hop has a brief but turbulent history. Bursting onto the music scene in the late 1970s, hop-hop caught on quickly although it took some time to break into the mainstream music scene. Increasingly, teenagers and young adults picked up on the unique sound of hip-hop; by the early 1980s, hip-hop spread throughout the United States. The messages carried by hip-hop music contributed to the many controversies surrounding hip-hop. The rivalries between some artists and record companies have led to an increasingly negative image of hip-hop among older consumers and government organizations. Over the past decade, hip-hop has continued to evolve, and it has lost a great deal of its negative image as artists have matured, feuds have died out, and artists have become crossover stars and gained a wider fan base. Ellis presents a brief history of hip-hop, focusing on the artists that have had major impact on the genre, as well as those who have gone beyond hip-hop to become famous artists in other media. This text is part of the "Hip-Hop Hitworkers" series. Reviewer: Danielle Williams
