Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
With his usual breezy, informal style, Wilson ( Landscaping with Container Plants ) tries to tame wildflowers just enough to convince doubters that they can convert part of their yards to meadow, prairie or woodland. Previous books have explored in equal or greater detail the same ideas, but Wilson's recognition as the host of PBS's Victory Garden South may lend his approach greater authority. The examples used to illustrate the various garden designs are invigorating, but may prove too large in scope for readers to feel comfortable adapting them to modest plots (how many people have a one-acre front yard to transform into a prairie? And how many towns would allow it?) Wisely, Wilson advises readers to check local ordinances before tackling such plans. That criticism aside, the book contains much that is useful: how to plant and maintain the garden, strategies for gardeners in the desert Southwest, the mountainous West and the Pacific Northwest, and strategies for gardeners with problem soil (damp, boggy). He devotes a chapter to luring butterflies and birds. Regional plant lists, garnered from experts across the country, will prove helpful, as will Wilson's analysis of those ubiquitous seed mixtures sold in cans. Photos. (Apr. )

The rose, our national flower, has long held a reputation as a horticultural prima donna: beautiful but difficult and demanding to grow. Druitt and Shoup assert this is not the case with antique roses, or Old Garden Roses, which are defined by the American Rose Society as any variety ``belonging to a class that was recognized to exist before 1867.'' The book's first half presents clear and useful information on design, site selection, propagation, planting, protecting, and pruning. This is followed by in-depth descriptions of 80 rose varieties in 12 classes. These selections heavily reflect the authors' own garden in central Texas (Zone 8), which results in few choices hardy enough for northern gardens. Fortunately, this is a small thorn to endure for a much-needed American work on antique roses that will appeal to many rose enthisiasts. It is also especially useful for those gardening in the southern half of the United States. Wilson, a host of PBS's Victory Garden and author of Landscaping with Container Plants ( LJ 1/90), focuses on how to establish various native wildflower habitats rather than how to landscape with a specific plant. Beginning with a narrative on his own wildflower garden in South Carolina, Wilson goes on to discuss in a warm and personal tone the requirements and characteristics of woodland gardens, meadows, prairies, Western wildflower gardens, and plants for moist habitats. He devotes other chapters to landscaping to attract butterflies and birds, and lists of plants for selected regions. In addressing the wide-ranging needs of the entire United States, Wilson may be trying to cover too much ground. But given his name recognition and the current emphasis on enriching the landscape with ecologically sound native flora, this book may well be in demand. Both books would be fine additions to most libraries, provided there is already a basic landscaping text such as Manuela King and others' Creative Home Landscaping (Ortho Bks., 1987) in the collection.-- Virginia A. Henrichs, Chicago Bo tanic Garden Lib., Glencoe, Ill.

Jim Wilson (hosts, PBS' The Victory Garden) urges use of native plants for their conservation, minimal care, bird feed production, and restrained showiness. He covers preparation, planting, maintenance, sources of seed, attracting birds and insects, interest groups. Some hundred color plates range from fine to fair. The text reads like a TV script.
