What would you give to be with the one you love?

Would you give it all, including your life?

…his hands on my back pressed me against him. This kiss was different, desperate almost. His lips left mine and gently, very lightly traveled across my cheek and down to my neck, hovering there. His cool breath sent chills through me, awakening feelings I didn’t know existed. His lips softly kissed my neck, and then I felt two sharp pricks. I gasped...

In a small college town in Northern California, Laney Alexander leads a regular, uneventful life–that is, until the charming and alluring Oliver Knight enters her world. Who is this gorgeous and mysterious stranger? Or, rather, what is he?

As Laney’s sophomore year of college begins, so does an unbelievable adventure–including a love she didn’t know she longed for. She soon learns that Oliver is not ordinary, nor is the rest of his family, including a sister who openly hates her and a brother who will stop at nothing for revenge. As she fights for her life, and Oliver’s love, Laney discovers that the fictional world of vampires isn’t so fictional after all. Nobody is safe, especially Laney, Oliver’s most important priority, and he will stop at nothing to protect her. I absolutely loved Laney!! Am ecstatic that the next installment is coming out this year, hurry up Joann with Darkness I need more Oliver in my life! I'm not going to go into detail and ruin the next esteemed Laney fan, but all I can say is it's a keeper. Worth its weight in gold! *drum roll!* And the best Hater award goes too. At Anonymous *GIGGLE* are you seriously hiding who you are? You might as well show yourself, if you're going to write something totally off, you might as well own up to it, you obviously don't know what you're talking about. College students!!! Did you go to college or were you deprived? It also sounds like, where you come from we're a little loosey goosey, when was our innocence lost? Eww sucia! Can we keep our jaded reviews to our self-please? Xoxo Joann! Another hater to add to your shelf, I see BIG things in your future!

Pleasantly surprised Sowles has an enjoyable writing style - for an author with few books, it is smooth and with very few errors to detract from the story. Dialogue flows well. Because of the inevitable comparisons to Twilight (which I loved, btw), I will give you this: Yes, there is a human (?) girl in love with what turns out to be a vampire and all sorts of danger and drama ensues. The other thing it has in common with Stephanie Meyers' books (and what I enjoyed about both) is the emotional story & development of the characters. I wouldn't go too far beyond that with comparisons, and this is definitely not a copycat story. The main character is barely 19 (not 22 like someone else said) - still young and naive enough to be figuring out who she is, and yet she isn't totally self-absorbed either. This is page-turner, there is enough mystery to keep you wanting more (even more so with the second book). I would recommend this to older teens because the content of this and the next book are rather mature (references to underage sex & drinking, general college age stuff).

Laney, Book 1 of The Brookhaven Vampire Series by Joann I. Martin Sowles is a young adult vampire novel that exceeds any expectation for young adult novels today. The main character Laney is a wonderful representation of what it would be like to today's world if a nineteen year old met a cute boy in class and he happened to be a vampire, or at least in our dreams. The setting in in the real world, a small college campus, and the events that take place are easily ones that readers can picture themselves in. The author makes her book so enjoyable because she makes her books relative in today's world. There is a scene where Laney, Oliver, Carter, and Kiera is watching a movie- Twilight and Oliver looks to Laney and asks if she likes vampires. It's a creative way of Sowles bringing her world to the real world of today. The story was very fast paced and full of mystery and adventure. Eveything that was done or said was relating to that next clue or piece of the puzzle. The author left you wanting more at the end with many questions such as, "Is the head of the coven her father?", "What is Laney", " Why is Kiera getting dizzy?", and "Why did Laney not tell Oliver about her "dream?" I can't wait for the next book. I have burnt out on young adult novels but once I began reading and entering her world I couldn't put it down. This book is great for the Twilight fans that have grown older and like stories much like Vampire Diaries. I highly recommed this book. Here is a synopsis of the book for you to decide for yourselves: What would you give to be with the one you love? Would you give it all, including your life? This book reminded me somewhat of Twilight, but Sowles is a better writer. She doesn't drone on and on about one thing that's not important. The book is fast paced and holds your attention from beginning til end. The cliff hanger as all good books have leaves you wanting more. The only thing that disappointed me was that I bought the book early on and I want the next book NOW! It's going to be a wonderful series. Needless to say if you liked Twilight, you'll love this book. It's great also because it's more grown up. These are college aged people Sowles writes of so there are some intimate moments, but nothing erotic happens. Great all around. Characters were wonderful and I liked that the heroine wasn't a sit on her bum and do nothing type of girl, waiting for her hero to come. There are points where she's like "well, this is it." But she still tries to keep herself alive. She's not so dependent upon Oliver to the point where you start to dislike her. I really liked Laney. If you haven't read the book you must. It's a must read. And Joann Sowles needs to write faster because the suspense is killing me.

Overall Rating:  4.25 Rockin Stars A little while back, it was suggested by some of our followers that we needed to read Laney (Brookehaven Vampires #1) by Joann I. Martin Sowles.  I was intrigued because this was the first I'd heard of the series.  Well, I'm hooked! This book captured me at the beginning and I couldn't put it down until I was finished and that's saying a lot because it's not a short story!  It doesn't have a happily ever after ending because the next book continues the saga.  This is Laney and Oliver's story and it's action-packed! Laney Alexander is a junior in college and she lives with her best friend Kierra Blake.  Their first day of school is a doozy! Kierra ends up passing out in class and Mr. McHottie helps get her to the school nurse.  Laney is drawn to Oliver Knight and it’s very difficult for her to focus when he's around.  She's been raised by her aunt after her mother died when she was only two.  Her father isn't in the picture and we aren't really told where he is.  Oliver Knight is an enigma, and he seems to read Laney like a book.  He knows when she stares at him in class and when she's happy or sad. He slowly begins to insert himself into her daily life.  The chemistry between Laney and Oliver sizzles.  They are different in every way, yet fit together like two pieces of a puzzle. This story is fast paced and you are left hanging at the end.  There are so many twists and turns that you are not sure if you are up or down and your emotions reflect it also.  The characters are complex and layered.  They are not easy to figure out at all and when you finally believe you have, something new begins and you are right at the beginning again.  This is a fabulously written book and a welcome addition to my library.  I look forward to reading the next installment in this series.

I liked this story although it was very frustrating when it ended. Be prepared that as you are reading it you will be left with a lot of unanswered questions. It is about Laney who is in college, meets a guy who happens to be a vampire. She learns that there are other creatures that go bump in the night besides vampires. I can't really say much else without giving away the story, but I would recommend it. I hope book two has some answers.
