Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Anthony Shanks, MD (Washington University School of Medicine)
Description: This is a set of 250 case-based cards that cover key topics in obstetrics and gynecology.
Purpose: They are intended to test readers' knowledge by presenting a case vignette and challenging readers to come up with a diagnosis. Quick information is provided to explain the answers.
Audience: The flashcards are designed for medical students, who will clearly benefit from them. The material is not in sufficient depth for residents.
Features: An index lists topics in obstetrics and gynecology, which are broadly divided by systems with a helpful reference to access a particular card easily. Each card presents a case and is typically one paragraph in length, and ends with a question that the reader attempts to answer. Answers are provided on the back of the card with information about diagnosis and even recurrence risk. For instance, there are several cards in obstetrics on different conditions with hypertension as a presenting sign. The reader has to evaluate if it is gestational hypertension or preeclampsia or some other variant. The back of the card provides clinically relevant information, including incidence and recurrence risk. The information is accurate and current, although there are no references. The flashcards are very handy and I witnessed medical students enjoying working with them. I wonder, however, how successful this would be as an app, as print flashcards seem dated.
Assessment: Flashcards are an excellent learning tool for medical students. Information is concise and the quizzing format well received. This material is best suited for medical students rotating on the clerkship.
