Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Thomas L. Pazdernik, PhD (University of Kansas Medical Center)
Description: This set of flashcards has been created to help students master the pharmacology needed for course and certification examinations.
Purpose: The authors, former medical students, have organized pharmacology via a series of well-designed flashcards, in order to bring together in one place, the concise pharmacology information needed to pass USMLE step 1 at the end of second year of medical school. They have done an excellent job of high lighting information needed to pass this examination.
Audience: These cards are designed for medical students who have to master pharmacology for the step 1 certification examination. However, they will be of value to all students in the health professions who have to master pharmacology as part of their curriculum and for certification examinations.
Features: The cards are organized by topics, with each topic introduced with a tree diagram of the covered drugs followed by some key summary tables of major principles, such as mechanism of action, and clinical uses, that are board-relevant and high yield. Each drug-specific card contains a clinical vignette on one side introducing the use of the drug in a clinical scenario. The other side provides the most useful information on that drug organized into sections entitled: similar drugs, mechanism of action, clinical uses, side effects, and other. The material is limited to information that is high yield for passing step 1. For the most part, I agree with the selection of material included on these cards.
Assessment: There are several commercially available sets of flashcards and other board review materials for students who need to master pharmacology for course and certification examinations. Thus, students have many options, and this resource deserves a close look.

    I Also Recommend:

Key tool for USMLE Step 1

I took my Step I boards late this summer and came across this great resource. It's the newer version of the Lange Pharm flashcards. They are definitely improved from the prior by comparison and I used them as my primary source, cross referencing with First Aid to study pharm. These beat out the other pharm cards on the market because they seemed to wean down each drug into the most board-relevant info or at least were shorter. I don't think I came across an exam question in pharm that wasn't in these cards. The clinical vignettes were a good practice run, but the info on the back of each card is really all you need to know for the exam. Highly recommended.

    Great Resource!

I used these cards while studying for my pharmacology course and then again while preparing for USMLE Step 1. These cards are comprehensive, concise and clear. They became my primary resource while studying. The clinical vignettes were helpful as well. Definitely have and will continue to recommend these cards to friends.
