From The CriticsReviewer: Thomas L. Pazdernik, PhD (University of Kansas Medical Center)
Description: This set of flashcards has been created to help students master the pharmacology needed for course and certification examinations.
Purpose: The authors, former medical students, have organized pharmacology via a series of well-designed flashcards, in order to bring together in one place, the concise pharmacology information needed to pass USMLE step 1 at the end of second year of medical school. They have done an excellent job of high lighting information needed to pass this examination.
Audience: These cards are designed for medical students who have to master pharmacology for the step 1 certification examination. However, they will be of value to all students in the health professions who have to master pharmacology as part of their curriculum and for certification examinations.
Features: The cards are organized by topics, with each topic introduced with a tree diagram of the covered drugs followed by some key summary tables of major principles, such as mechanism of action, and clinical uses, that are board-relevant and high yield. Each drug-specific card contains a clinical vignette on one side introducing the use of the drug in a clinical scenario. The other side provides the most useful information on that drug organized into sections entitled: similar drugs, mechanism of action, clinical uses, side effects, and other. The material is limited to information that is high yield for passing step 1. For the most part, I agree with the selection of material included on these cards.
Assessment: There are several commercially available sets of flashcards and other board review materials for students who need to master pharmacology for course and certification examinations. Thus, students have many options, and this resource deserves a close look.
