Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Francys Subiaul, PhD (George Washington University)
Description: This book, an update to the 2001 edition, provides a comprehensive overview of the assessment and intervention for childhood language disorders.
Purpose: The new edition incorporates the latest research and new trends in the field of speech-language pathology. Intended for students of speech-language pathology, it focuses on the clinical application of the information. A large number of children that speech-language pathologists see will present with some type of language delay or disorder. The book is organized well, the information is presented clearly, and the author's objectives are met.
Audience: Although it is written for students of speech-language pathology, the book can also be used as a valuable reference by speech-language pathologists. The author has incorporated the latest research and new trends in the field, and has a considerable amount of expertise in this area.
Features: The book covers the assessment and treatment of language disorders in children who are at the prelinguistic, emerging language, developing language, language-for-learning, and advanced language levels. The author reviews various models of childhood language disorders, the main purposes of intervention, considerations for special populations, and children who are culturally and linguistically different to give students valuable background information. The author also provides helpful reference tables, such as a chart of the milestones of communication and literacy development.
Assessment: This is an extremely helpful book for both students and clinicians in the field of speech-language pathology. The third edition is needed to provide the most up-to-date research in this constantly changing field.

    Pretty Good!

This text is pretty good. It's big, but uses nice size font. The information is thorough and stated to make "challenging" information easier to understand. It is informative across the board as far as language disorders and development is concerned. I can actually say that while reading this I did not fall asleep:)
