Overview

The Language of Medicine, 8th Edition, shows you how to analyze and understand the meanings of medical terms in a way that makes sense-by breaking terms down into smaller word parts and clearly explaining them in relation to human anatomy, physiology, and pathology. Extensive hands-on practice, repetition, and case studies let you learn by doing-writing terms, labeling diagrams, and completing comprehensive, practical exercises.

Brings terminology to life with dynamic, three-dimensional illustrations, compelling clinical photographs, realistic medical cases, and laboratory and x-ray reports. Keeps it simple through the use of clear, nontechnical explanations of terms. Promotes active learning and teaches you how to study with a wealth of hands-on exercises. Follows a logical progression, from introductory chapters on word analysis, to an exploration of each body system.

Editorial Reviews

Reviewer: Susan A Trombley, AAS, RRT(William Beaumont Hospitals)
Description: The eighth edition of The Language of Medicine continues to be a valued asset for those in the medical field. It is written in simple, nontechnical language making terminology and concepts easy to understand.
Purpose: This edition continues its high standards in educating students. It is a valuable teaching tool with which instructors can guide their students on a more visual approach to learning medical terminology.
Audience: The author's goal "is to help students learn and instructors teach." It has been 31 years since the first edition was published and this book continues to speak to students of all backgrounds and levels by engaging them in an active learning experience. The author is an expert in medical terminology.
Features: This is not the typical medical terminology textbook. It connects medical terminology to real life by incorporating scenarios and medical cases. Each chapter is divided into the different systems of the body which gives the reader an understanding of anatomy. Full color diagrams enable the learner to visualize what they are reading and enhance understanding of anatomy, physiology, and pathology. Each area of the chapter is designed to give the student the utmost learning experience. A review sheet at the end of each chapter helps students with self assessment. Also available with this book is a CD-ROM that has additional activities to test student knowledge. The many illustrations and exercises reinforce new concepts.
Assessment: The eighth edition is more visually dynamic than its predecessor. This book continues to hold its high standards with its newly incorporated revisions. This would be a valuable asset to any program requiring medical terminology and for public and college/university libraries as well.
From the Publisher
The Language of Medicine textbook that I have is invaluable. It was my first helpful text over a year ago and is wonderful now when I am going to review for certification exams. Thank you so much for the excellent photographs, diagrams, practice areas, and understandable text!

    FAVORITE SCHOOL BOOK!

lol.. awesome awesome book! It is so easy to read & understand!! And because there are study sections, exercises, answers to the excersices, built-in review sheets, fill-in the blanks, and a glossary of medical word parts to english & vise versa, this book is THE BEST way to learn & memorize medical terminology!

Neeeded it for my class, but noticed that it's a great book for self teaching as well! Shoot, if i would have know of this book before i took the class, i could have save myself a couple hundrerd dollars!!!!

This book shed so much light of the medical field for me, just from understanding the TERMS!!! It is also a great book for FUTURE REFERENCES! if you're a student in the medical field, NEVER GIVE UP THIS BOOK! lol And for those wanting to touch up on the terms... AWESOME to use as a quiz book because of the more-than-plenty fill-in-the-blanks through out the book... =)

I DO plan on buying another & future editions that may come out while I am in school... can never go wrong when testing your knowledge!!! =)

    Do Not Recommend!!

Ordered textbook 8-29. Pd extra for 3-6 day delivery. Should have received 9-8. Sent email to inquire about delivery. Never received a response. Talked to BN. They tried to help, but seller said was lost in transit. They did not provide BN with a tracking number. They said I should receive it by 9-15 so BN instructed me to wait. (Was not happy about this since was a needed textbook, not something to be read at leisure.) Emailed BN on 9-19 to request refund and they are giving it. If I could leave zero stars, I would. Worst results ever with a third party seller. I just looked at the stars. I wish I would have read reviews because this has happened to several people.

    great book!

I was going to take the class just for fun with this book, but after reading through it and working on the exercises, I saved myself lots of money. You learn lots on your own with this book, didn't even need the class. I highly recommend it!

Should have been The Joy Of The Body & How It Works

This book was a great asset as a precurser to anatomy & physiology. Along with the CD one is not only able to attain medical terminology but grasp the comprehension of where, what, & how this term effects the body.

No one book is ever perfect

...I have reviewed many, many text books used for studying medical terminology and 'The Language of Medicine' is the best of the lot...it may have a few problems, but on average outweighs many others..its outline is clear, easy to understand, and effective...it is impossible to learn and retain all the necessary terms required to function in industry without understanding the background and the association of the terms to the body...therefore, the study of the anatomy, physiology, and pathology is a necessity.
