Editorial Reviews
Reviewer: Susan A Trombley, AAS, RRT(William Beaumont Hospitals)
Description: The eighth edition of The Language of Medicine continues to be a valued asset for those in the medical field. It is written in simple, nontechnical language making terminology and concepts easy to understand.
Purpose: This edition continues its high standards in educating students. It is a valuable teaching tool with which instructors can guide their students on a more visual approach to learning medical terminology.
Audience: The author's goal "is to help students learn and instructors teach." It has been 31 years since the first edition was published and this book continues to speak to students of all backgrounds and levels by engaging them in an active learning experience. The author is an expert in medical terminology.
Features: This is not the typical medical terminology textbook. It connects medical terminology to real life by incorporating scenarios and medical cases. Each chapter is divided into the different systems of the body which gives the reader an understanding of anatomy. Full color diagrams enable the learner to visualize what they are reading and enhance understanding of anatomy, physiology, and pathology. Each area of the chapter is designed to give the student the utmost learning experience. A review sheet at the end of each chapter helps students with self assessment. Also available with this book is a CD-ROM that has additional activities to test student knowledge. The many illustrations and exercises reinforce new concepts.
Assessment: The eighth edition is more visually dynamic than its predecessor. This book continues to hold its high standards with its newly incorporated revisions. This would be a valuable asset to any program requiring medical terminology and for public and college/university libraries as well.
