Description: This book provides an overview of laparoscopic surgery. Laparoscopic techniques, laparoscopic procedures, and indications for the procedures are addressed. A brief description of minimally invasive surgeries performed in surgical subspecialties is also given.
Purpose: The text consists of chapters that outline all the general issues and techniques required to perform minimally invasive surgery, including chapters describing individual laparoscopic procedures in detail.
Audience: This book is intended as a textbook and surgical atlas for laparoscopic surgeons and for surgeons in training. The last section of the book describes pertinent minimally invasive procedures as performed in surgical subspecialties other than general surgery.
Features: The book contains numerous black-and-white illustrations that are high quality and quite well done. However, in some areas, color photography depicting actual laparoscopic surgery may have been a better way to illustrate the points in the text.
Assessment: This is the first edition of a book that will act as a text in this rapidly evolving field. It catalogues the gamut of accepted minimally invasive procedures and adequately describes minimally invasive techniques for a surgeon in training and for surgeons in practice who perform laparoscopic surgery. Because the field of minimally invasive surgery is rapidly evolving, it is expected that the indications, procedures, and techniques of performing minimally invasive surgery will change rapidly during the next several years. Continued updates of this text will be necessary.
