Barnes & Noble - Lydia Vanderloo
Born in Belgium, raised in Italy, Lara Fabian is now ready to conquer the world from her current perch in Montreal. Indeed, she's already topped the six-million mark in sales in the French-speaking world, and it's easy to see why on LARA FABIAN, the young singer's commanding English language debut. Her passion-fueled vocal pop traces its roots not only to another French-speaking diva, Celine Dion, but back to the root: the soulful, stylized gushings of Barbra Streisand. Fabian isn't afraid to charge each breath and note with all-cards-on-the-table emotion, her booming, cathartic voice soaring above clean, studio-bred arrangements that effortlessly fuse keys, strings,...

Fabian isn't afraid to charge each breath and note with all-cards-on-the-table emotion, her booming, cathartic voice soaring above clean, studio-bred arrangements that effortlessly fuse keys, strings, and rock-based elements. As if to show that she's a serious vocalist, Fabian begins the album with an interpretation of the familiar classical theme "Adagio" and closes with an even more sumptuous Italian version that will leave goosebumps on your neck as she surges toward -- and captures -- the high notes. Fabian flirts with the contemporary R&B world on the slinky "Till I Get Over You," produced with help from ex-Color Me Badd member Sam Watters, and the punchy, resolute "I Am Who I Am," which could be her anthem. Piano accompaniment and a sax run lend "Part of Me" a light-jazz sensibility, but the lush choir backing Fabian on the resounding final chorus makes it big enough to fill a stadium. Another show-stealer is the dramatic "To Love Again," which could go head-to-head with Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" if it weren't for the bombastic guitar solo stealing some of Fabian's thunder. This singer doesn't need such studio flourishes to make her point -- her voice does all the work for her. This may be the first you hear from Lara Fabian, but it certainly won't be the last.
All Music Guide - William Ruhlmann
Like Celine Dion, Lara Fabian started her professional career in Quebec, singing in French, and crossed over to popular success in France before turning to the English-language market under the auspices of Sony. With Dion declaring at least a temporary retirement, it's no surprise that Sony has thrown its considerable weight behind the effort to make Fabian an international superstar. And there's no mistaking that effort on her self-titled English debut not to be confused with her self-titled debut of 1991, which was sung in French. All the accoutrements of major-label largesse are present, especially in the total of ten credited producers, who include Patrick Leonard Madonna, Walter Afanasieff Mariah Carey, and Brian Rawling, who produced Cher's comeback hit "Believe." Working closely with Fabian, who is a songwriter as well, these heavy hitters have created widescreen power ballads with the occasional dance song thrown in. The lyrics are the usual generalized depictions of the joys and turmoil of romance, with the music almost invariably swelling portentously halfway through the track so the singer can take off on an overwrought tear. Fabian has the pipes to handle such material and is actually better at singing in English than Dion, who always had trouble with her phrasing. She doesn't do herself any favors as a songwriter, but that isn't very important on this kind of record. As in a big-budget summer movie, it's the stars and special effects that matter, not the plot. It's easy to see this album making Lara Fabian a star in the English-speaking world, but it took even Dion a couple of albums to crack that market, and she was a hard worker. Fabian has her work cut out for her, but she's taken a big step toward filling Dion's shoes with this album.

    Better than Nue?

An outstanding recording. I enjoyed especially the sound quality - Not many sound so good - I can't understand why Nue didn't sound as good "In my opinion"even though it was recorded later. Possibly an outstanding engineer/Studio. It's the only difference I can see in the credits.Track 1,3,5 are my favourites. The Bongos on 3 are pretty amaizing. Obviously the singer is one of the greatest around.

She is not allowed to be Lara

After reading all the reviews that criticize Lara Fabian for not sounding like Celine or Mariah, I thought I'd best jump in. First of all, Lara has her own distinct voice and style, but because she made Quebec her adopted home, has been unfairly compared to the "Titanic" singer from that same Canadian province. She is, in fact, superb in her own right with a vocal quality (and song-writing ability) that is not only original, but impressive and moving as well. But that's beside the point for this album. The real problem is that the SONY executives, with more of marketing than creative eye, decided to introduce Lara to the English-speaking world using an American pop studio formula. This CD is filled with commercial sounding hooks and rubber-stamp arrangements, forcing Lara to sound un-Lara-like. Anyone familiar with her French-language work has to be disappointed. It's hard to believe, for example, that the same singer who is cherished by her Franophone fans for power ballads such as "Je t'aime" had to suffer the indignity of releasing (yes, because some of the same producers and song-writers were used that worked with those "divas") "I Will Love Again," a disco-oriented, dance mix number. While it may have sold well, it did not reflect the authentic Lara Fabian and distorted if not ultimately damaged her image in the American market. With the possible exception of "Broken Vow" and "Adagio" several of the other selections on this CD are cut from that same contrived cloth. The tragedy, therefore, is not that Lara Fabian doesn't sound like Celine or Mariah. It's that she's been prevented from sounding like herself. Too bad. Given this kind of musical production and promotion, the States have been cheated of a wonderfully gifted and powerful talent.

    Lara has magical Powers.

Lara Fabian is 33 years old french girl like Celine and i love her amazing voice somtimes she sounds just the same as Celine and i can´t hear any diffirence in their voices and she is the new BIG DIVA of this millienium more than Mariah Carey,Whitney Houston I Think Lara will be as famous as Celine in no time when her second album will be realized in january 2004 and maybe she will reach some number 1#singles i hope she will.

    Lara Fabian [Sony/Columbia]

What is this the new Celine Dion i don´t think so Lara Fabian has a great voice but she isn´t as good as Celine she doesn´t have the same lungpower as Celine and Lara breathe to much in the end of her songs like in Adagio,You´re Not From Here you can hear her humming and trying to reach the high note as Celine does but she can´t Celine is much better singer. What is Lara trying to do she is comparing her self to Celine and that is just not right Lara has a voice similar as Mariah Carey,Whitney Houston, and should try to sing a little bit more pop or RN,B leave the powerballads to Celine and Mariah even Tina Arena has stronger and more power ful voice than Lara Fabian. Lara Fabian isn´t Celine Dion and never will be but the first album isn´t all bad so i give it 3 stars.

    Lara Fabian [Sony/Columbia]

Well Here is another great singer that sounds as Celine Dion Lara Fabian is 33 year old and she has a wonderful gift her amazing voice but she hasn´t got the same chance as Celine in America maybe bad timing or what She was lucky to work with Celine´s&Mariah Carey´s producer Walter Afanasieff on 4 songs on her debut english album that was realized both in 1999 and 2000. Lara hasn´t jet realized another english album instead she has done some french albums. I Think Lara can make it big if she works with the right people as Walter,David Foster or even Ric Wake all of them have made their magic with Celine and Mariah Carey.Lara have greater voice than Mariah Carey i think she has the same range as Celine and Barbra Streisand so is Tina Arena.

    An Angel's Voice

Lara has fast become my favorite artist, male or female. She puts all her heart into every song, I do not speak French, but I can still listen to her French albums. The emotion is tremendous. Celine without the nasal sounds!

    Lara Fabian - Truly Remarkable

This CD is absolutely fantastic. Her voice and music are so invigorating and moving. Her ballads are so beautiful they leave you in awe. ''Adagio'' and ''Your Not From Here'', to name a few, are absolutely breathtaking. Every song on this CD is remarkable. I am a little dissapointed that she hasn't had more publicity. Her voice outshines any popular top 40 pop artist I have heard in a long time. If ''Adagio'' was released in the US it would skyrocket to #1 faster than any other single. She and her music are truly amazing and I look forward to her next US release. Buy this CD - it is a guarantee and you get your $'s worth.

    WOW!

If you like the breathy, sexy voice of Amy Grant, the powerful voice of Celine Dion and the emotional voice of Barbara Striesand, you will love Lara Fabian as she delicately combines the excellence of all three characteristics into a romantic and charismatic journey you will want to take over and over again.

LARA WILL BE THE NEXT SINGING SENSATION

I received this CD from a friend in Paris and I haven't been this excited by a singer in a very long time. The emotion that Lara puts into every song comes through in her voice so well that you feel it through out your whole body. 'Broken Vow' is undeniably the best song I have ever heard. WOW!!! This song will definitely bring tears to your eyes. Awesome!!!

    Be Prepared to Be Amazed

Absolutely stunning English-language debut from one of the most original and stunning voices in the world. Ms. Fabian pours her heart out on this CD, and her sense of style, intonation, phrasing, and singing are practically peerless. A certain comparison to Celine Dion is inevitable, and indeed the two singers shouldn't shun comparisons, since they're both articulate, graceful, and powerful in their delivery styles. Where their greatest contrast lies is in the registers in which they sing--Celine's pure soprano, Lara's smouldering alto. The songs on this CD are wonderful gems; Lara will make you laugh, cry, cheer, and BEG for more! (Also recommended are her two French-language releases Carpe Diem and Pure.)
