Meet the Author

P�o Baroja y Nessi (San Sebasti�n, 1872-Madrid, 1956). Espa�a. Su padre (Seraf�n Baroja Zornoza), y su madre (Carmen Nessi y Go�i), pertenec�an a familias distinguidas y conocidas en San Sebasti�n vinculadas con el periodismo y la imprenta. P�o fue el tercero de tres hermanos. M�s tarde naci� Carmen, tambi�n escritora ocasional. En 1891 termin� la carrera de medicina en Valencia y se doctor� en 1894 en Madrid con una tesis sobre el dolor. Fue mal estudiante y desde entonces mostr� un car�cter gru��n, arisco y descontento. T�mido y retra�do, nunca se cas�. Tras defender su tesis, march� a Cestona, en el Pa�s Vasco. Pas� un a�o all� y despu�s de una estancia en San Sebasti�n vivi� en Madrid donde empez� a colaborar en peri�dicos y revistas de ideas sociales anarquistas y de izquierdas. En 1900 public� su primer libro, una recopilaci�n de cuentos titulada Vidas sombr�as, la mayor�a escritos en Cestona sobre gentes de esa regi�n y sus propias experiencias como m�dico. El libro fue comentado por escritores como Miguel de Unamuno, Azor�n y Benito P�rez Gald�s. Poco despu�s intim� con el anarquista Jos� Mart�nez Ruiz, �Azor�n�, y pretendi� entrar en la pol�tica. Tras su fracaso en la pol�tica, viaj� por Europa (residi� en Par�s y Londres, y pas� por Italia, B�lgica, Suiza, Alemania, Noruega, Holanda y Dinamarca) y acumul� una impresionante biblioteca que instal� en el caser�o de Itzea, donde pasaba los veranos con su familia. En 1935 fue admitido en la Real Academia de la Lengua. Durante la Guerra Civil fue amenazado por los carlistas y emigr� a Par�s. Volvi� al t�rmino de la guerra y tuvo problemas con la censura. Identificado con las ideas liberales, repudi� al comunismo. Muri� en 1956. Su ata�d fue llevado en hombros por sus admiradores, Ernest Hemingway y Camilo Jos� Cela.
