Children's Literature - Ramirose I. Attebury
A well-organized and comprehensive look at the earth's mountains, this book is part of the "Observar la tierra" series. The book's useful table of contents, glossary, and index make it a functional example of a nonfiction book that will benefit all Spanish-speaking students. Definitions of terms related to mountains are placed alongside photographic examples so that a paragraph describing mountain ranges is situated next to photographs of Mount Everest in the Himalayas, the Matterhorn in the Alps, and a guanaco standing on a mountain in the Andes. Likewise, a section about the types of rocks found in mountains is flanked by photographs of granite, volcanic rocks, limestone, and sandstone. Far from simply identifying terms however, the book describes mountains from numerous angles. Through readable text, charts, and pictures, readers learn about their creation by fault lines and volcanoes, the changes in form that mountains undergo as a result of glaciers and landslides, the plant and animal life that mountains sustain, and the practical and entertaining uses that humans have found for them around the world. Whether as a supplementary resource for Spanish-speaking students in school science lessons or as an addition to a non-fiction collection in a public library, this book would be an efficient use of funds.
