Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Patrick Hunter
School, Halloween, Thanksgiving, raking leaves, harvesting vegetables, picking apples, and wearing sweaters and jackets are fall activities that are covered in this book using both the English and Spanish languages. The subject matter is accompanied by large, colorful pictures, and the text is clear and easily readable, with the English version at the top of the page and Spanish beneath it. The last page states "What are other signs that it's fall?" leaving an opportunity for open classroom discussion. A glossary, index, and table of contents are provided in both English and Spanish. The glossary words are in alphabetical order, making them easy to locate in the individual language but making it difficult to easily compare and contrast the words in the two languages. The glossary words are also not highlighted in the text, which does not allow the reader to go back and forth between the text and glossary words for referencing. Addition information is provided though an Internet site, but the process is rather roundabout. Readers enter a 13-digit code in the FactHound Web site to be given additional related sites. These sites are general, and the resulting list is far from extensive, merely two or three sites. Despite these drawbacks, Rustad manages to create a beneficial resource for bilingual readers in the classroom or libraries or for those wanting to learn or expose themselves to a second language. It is part of the "Todo acerca del otono/All About Fall" series Reviewer: Patrick Hunter
