Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
Entertainment icon Madonna zooms once again to the top of the charts, this time breaking new personal ground with her first of five children's books that's showstoppingly cool. A modern-day Cinderella tale for kids ("even grown-up ones"), Madonna's Brit-flavored picture book is a cleverly told story about four English friends -- Nicole, Amy, Charlotte, and Grace -- who spend all their time together reading books, liking boys, and dancing. The only trouble with their friendship's bliss, however, is their mutual jealousy and disgust toward another local girl, Binah, who gets lots of attention with her "long, silky hair and skin like milk and honey," a knack for good grades and sports, and her kind attitude. But a sleepover at Nicole's brings all-too-real fairy godmother dreams, and after the four "English roses" secretly spy a motherless Binah in a less-than-fun home life, they promise to "be kinder to Binah and stop complaining about their own lives." Madonna hits a high note with her straightforward, sometimes sassy text that's still gently smooth and challenging, giving kids a welcome reminder to count their blessings and be compassionate to others. Fashion illustrator Jeffrey Fulvimari creates his own command performance, too, making Madonna's words pop with strikingly detailed watercolors that mix heavy black lines and candy-colored tones to give the book its London-hip, multi-patterned groove. With proceeds from the book being donated to a children's charity, Madonna's foray into writing for younger audiences is a "ray of light" that's more than just a flash in the pan. Matt Warner
Criticas
Gr 3-5-The simultaneous (and carefully synchronized) release of pop star Madonna's first children's book in more than 30 languages in more than 100 countries has created an unprecedented media blitz for the book industry. The story, and its theme of envy and cattiness among a group of school-age girls, is a bit more mundane. The four English roses are 11-year-old girls depicted by the illustrator as exquisitely fashionable stick figures. Nicole, Amy, Charlotte, and Grace are the best of friends, secure in their enveloping similarities. The arrival of a beautiful new girl named Binah rocks their protected and petty world, and they conspire to shun her. During a sleepover, the girls' dreams are manipulated by a fairy godmother who offers them the opportunity to swap lives with Binah. When they seem uncertain, the fairy invites them to Binah's house for a peek at her circumstances. It turns out that Binah's life is less than picture perfect. She lives alone with her hardworking dad. Since her mother has died, Binah is responsible for all the housework ( la Cinderella). Her bedroom, unlike theirs, is spartan, housing only one doll. The overprivileged and now chastened girls take pity on Binah and resolve to befriend her. All's well that ends well, as the girls accept her into their group. Fulvimari's watercolor illustrations lend the story a sophisticated European panache that will attract girls in this age group like flies to honey. Cort s's Spanish translation (for Planeta) is flawless. Recommended for all collections. A must selection for bookstores. Maria Otero-Boisvert, "Criticas" Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
