Editorial Reviews

Edward D. Kim
The third edition of this comprehensive textbook has been thoroughly updated from the previous edition in 1989 to reflect important advances in the field. The purpose is to allow the clinician to make informed and unbiased treatment decisions utilizing laser technology. This edition also intends to provide a comprehensive reference with a balance between the physics, rationale, and techniques of treatment and the results of therapy. These goals are very important in the 1990s, when the public often perceives laser treatment as a high-tech and thus better form of therapy. The authors have laudably achieved their objectives in a state-of-the-art fashion, pointing out both strengths and weaknesses of lasers. The targeted audiences are the practicing urologist and the urology resident, who both will benefit from this book. The contributors are generally regarded as the experts in this field. Perhaps the only weakness of this edition is the quality of the intraoperative and endoscopic photographs. The previous edition included eight pages of color plates and the text was printed on glossy paper, which clearly enhanced the quality of the plates. These features, which are helpful in understanding the visually oriented nature of laser therapy, were deleted from the third edition. The illustrations and references are well selected and current. This book is an excellent, up-to-date reference for the practicing urologist and resident. The chapters are well written, avoid repetition, and nicely integrate the technology and practice of laser usage in urology. This particular edition is a must for the library and bookstore because the second edition has become outdated. This book is the authoritativereference on this subject.
