Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
The most faithful of all dogs returns in Lassie Come-Home by Eric Knight. Begun as a short story in the Saturday Evening Post, the tale was so well received that Knight expanded it into this novel, first published in 1940 by John C. Winston. This story of a boy and his beloved collie has been retold in many formats but appears here in its original unabridged version, with Marguerite Kirmse's charming b&w interior illustrations and new jacket art. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Lassie, like Bambi, is an animal most of us grew to know and love when we were very young. Lassie was the most real, since she was a beautiful collie, a pet that one could aspire to have. Hard times hit Lassie's master, and she is sold to a local Duke. Lassie knew that Joe was her true friend evidenced by her escapes from the Duke and her incredible journey of one thousand miles over the course of a year to be reunited with Joe. The text in this new edition flows smoothly, and the suspense builds. It is perfect for reading aloud or for young readers to tackle on their own. The muted pencil and watercolor illustrations reflect the somber English and Scottish countryside, and we see the beautiful golden collie transformed into a bony skeleton during her arduous trek, and then back to her robust frolicking self when she finally reaches home.

This is a delightful and heartwarming story that takes place rig

This is a delightful and heartwarming story that takes place right after World War I, in England and Scotland. The storyline centers on Lassie, the Carraclough's pet Collie. The family loves their dog very much... but when hard times hit, the family is forced into making a life-changing and heart-wrenching decision.

The town of Greenall Bridge could always depend on seeing Lassie trotting down the streets with her owner, young Joe Carraclough.
As the story unfolds, you will discover how determined and loyal that a dog can really be.

Through the experiences of Lassie, you will meet many of the villagers, some with thoughtful regards, and some characters with bad intentions. No matter what kind of situation, someone is always there to guide Lassie on her way.

This book was originally published by Eric Knight in 1940. Only 3 years later, the author died. However, the classic story of Lassie has been told again & again since then, in other revised & adapted books, and also in movies.

I think almost anyone would enjoy this story. The dedication and perseverance of the dog, to the quaint villages of England and Scotland, and all the characters within, along with their lovely British accents... I savored every word!

    A Timeless Treasure!

When my daughters were 3 and 6 this was the first of the many classic stories I read to them before nap time. In reading the original version to them, I realized what I had missed as a youngster in reading only edited editions. This story took us several days to read, one chapter at a time, but it was worth it; not only for a bonding time with my girls, but for life lessons as well.

    Any dog-lover book

This is a great book, about a young boy and his dog during the Great Depression that changed millions of peoples' lives, Eric Knight lived during this time period and had a background on how to write a story of Lassie and the boy that loved her.

    WONDERFUL

This book, a heartwarming tale of a dog and boy's bond, is an unforgetable calssic. I read it in 4th grade and now, as a Junior High schooler, I have fallen in love a second time. I can honestly say that I will read it again in the future. I highly recommend it.
