Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 6-10 Melanie Martin, the new girl in town, jumps at the chance to play a role in her high school's mystery play, directed by popular Susan Trels. Melanie hopes that the play will enable her to make new friends and maybe even bring her to the attention of a handsome fellow actor. She never expects that she'll wind up framed for murderor that she will be in danger of becoming the murderer's next victim. The first half of the book resembles a soap opera in its portrayal of the interrelationships between the in-crowd at the local high school. The story becomes more suspenseful after the murder occurs, and the story begins to revolve around Melanie's attempts to exonerate herself by finding the real murderer. The novel is marred, however, by inconsistent characters and improbable plot developments. At times, it sounds uncomfortably like a morality play. Nevertheless, these flaws are unlikely to deter young adult readers who enjoy light mysteries with a dash of romance thrown in. Ruth Sadasivan, Toledo-Lucas County Public Library, Ohio
