Overview

Student Claire Danvers learns that three vampires have vanished without a trace. And after an uneasy encounter with Morganville's latest resident, Claire is certain that the mysterious Magnus isn't human. But is he a vampire-or something else entirely? One thing is clear: Magnus is to blame for the disappearances. And if vampires are turning into victims, what chance does a human like Claire have of stopping him?

Editorial Reviews

Kirkus Reviews
Absorbing suspense dominates this chick-lit vampire story. This 11th installment of the Morganville Vampires series doesn't require familiarity with the previous books for readers to figure out what's going on, and to find excellent suspense. Claire, the story's main protagonist, lives in the Glass House with her heartthrob Shane, her best friend, goth girl Eve, and vampire Michael (whom human Eve wants to marry). Humans and vampires share Morganville, with humans providing pints of blood for their more powerful neighbors. The town reacts against the proposed marriage, but all becomes moot when a far more powerful entity invades: the draug, sea-based enemies of the vampires. They decimate the vampire population, also attacking humans who get in their way. Claire finds herself caught in a limbo-like state as she tries to fight them, adding another layer of suspense to the already gripping tale. Caine puts her strong imagination to good use in devising semi-impossible scenarios for her characters to conquer, and she writes the major fight scene well. A few quirky characters and some humor flavor the story, such as Claire's highly eccentric scientist employer, vampire Myrnin, who apparently secretly loves her, as does the emotionally aware house the group lives in. Chick-lit staples come in the form of clothes, a bit of gossip and girl rivalry. A gripping, original take on vampires. (Paranormal adventure. 12 & up)

    a pulse pounding supernatural thriller

Morganville is not a typical Texas town, but a social experiment to see whether humans and vampires can peacefully co-exist. The vampires stand at the top of the food chain; they make the rules that humans must obey. Four friends (humans Claire, Eve and Shane and the vampire Michael) room in Glass House. Eve and Michael are in love and want to marry, but their respective species violently oppose interspecies marriage.

Taking a rest from the nuptial craziness, Claire and Shane meet a vampire from a nearby town with a letter addressed to Amelie the Founder and ruler of Morganville. Myron the mad vampire scientist takes it and tells them it says "run". At about the same time, Claire sees a strong male who is not vampire or human. An evil long standing enemy of Amelia and her species has arrived. This thing disguised as human can easily kill a vampire. The town's residents regardless of specie are in extreme danger as recently three vampires vanished without a trace after a visit from Magnus.

The eleventh Morganville Vampires small town fantasy (see Ghost Town) is a pulse pounding supernatural thriller that keeps readers on the edge until the Last Breath expires. Courageous Claire has risked her life before against impossible odds, but this time the adversary seems too powerful, but though human she still tries to rescue vampires from the wrath of Magnus. Shane's perspective is narrower as he thrives to do what it takes to keep his risk-taking beloved Claire safe. Rachel Caine writes a wonderful young adult tale in which the heroes must choose fight or flight with either option most likely leading to death.

THE MORGANVILLE SERIES WE ALL FELL IN LOVE WITH IS BACK!

Ok so i have to admit that the last few Morganville books have dragged on and been a little pointless, but i loved the first six so much i continued to read them hoping they would get back to how they were. I AM VERY HAPPY TO SAY IT HAS HAPPENED! It reminded me of why I feel in love with the series in the first place. I This book was absolutely phenomenal ! The plot was incredibly intriguing and suspenseful and the characters were relatable and charming. The only thing i was upset about was that Eve was not as witty as she normally is, but i think it has to do with all the drama that was constantly around her. In all, i honestly believe that the Morganville Vampire Series has gotten its Mojo back.. and i cant be any happier! CANT WAIT UNTIL THE NEXT BOOK!!

Eleventh entry in the series where it got intense and action packed.

OMG this got intense and action packed, pretty quickly in the book. And the ending, I was like you can't end it like that! Good entry in the series though. And yay for more Myrnin. Obviously can't wait for the next book. This series is great and the four main Claire, Shane, Michael and Eve are awesome.

This is another book I've decided to get off my tbr pile. One main reason is that i have been following this series for so long, I needed to read it.

This book completely took my by surprise. Once I started this series, I was so used to problems arising in Morganville and my fave team of Claire, Michael, Eve and Shane go to the rescue. Not in this book. Oh, don't get me wrong, they go to the rescue, but there are some major turn of events going on that literally had me gasping!

The plot line of the book starts off with a slow build, leading to a giant explosion. I loved it. For once, instead of danger being on just the vampires, it's become a danger to the humans too. I loved that Ms. Caine wrote such a explosive plot line that left me sad, angry then much to my surprise happy. The plot never wavered from it's intensity, instead continued to combust over and over again! I just kept freaking out with each turn of the page that I could not will myself to stop.

The love interest in the book wavers some. I enjoyed the tension of both couples facing hard times yet getting through it together with love and support. The reader can feel the emotions of love and the joy of friendship they have with each other.

Last Breath takes the carpet out from under you. The clear description of the narrative makes the reader feel as if they are in Morganville. The strength of the characters with a dynamic plot leaves the reader eager, racing to the end of the book. With an explosive ending, Last Breath stakes are rising high.

    Jaw droppingly amazing!!

Our Review [by Michelle L. Olson – LITERAL ADDICTION’s Pack Alpha]:
I love the Morganville Vampires series and have been an avid follower since book #1. Nothing could have prepared me for the fabulousness that was book #11, Last Breath, however.

Rachel hit a home run with this book in every way possible!

Like all Morganville books, there was tons of action, danger lurking around every corner, sweet romance, problems to be solved, friendships solidified, alliances forged, and mysteries galore.

Unlike other Morganville books, Last Breath gave the reader a closer insight into some of our main characters when Rachel switched up point of view from Claire, to Michael, to Amelie and back – all seamlessly.

While I read that people were worried that there wasn’t going to be as much Myrnin in this book (yes, I love him too!), no worries, there was plenty. Actually, if possible, we get an even better glimpse into the enigma that is Myrnin, making my love for him grow even more.

This book was an intense, heart pounding, sigh & gasp inducing, anger igniting, emotional thrill ride and it was my favorite of the series thus far. Bottom line…Last Breath took my breath away.

LITERAL ADDICTION gives Last Breath an easy 5 Skulls, and would recommend it to EVERYONE! Morganville may be classified as YA, but adult Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance readers will love this series just as much. You really do need to read the first 10 installments of The Morganville Vampires series before settling in for this gem, however. There is just too much history that you would be without, thus making Last Breath only a sliver of the prize it truly is. I am beyond thrilled that there will be a 12th book in the series, my only complaint is that I don’t have it in my hot little hands right this second.

Great series! Cant put it down!

I am a loyal fan of Rachel Caine her stories are amazing. I have read every book in this series and love them. They are so intense. If you are reader like me who really gets into the stories you are reading you will love it. There are many times that while reading an intense scene ( there are a lot) that I would get a text and the noise would make me jump just because I was so engrossed on what was happening. If you like suspense, thrillers, and love mixed in with a little teen drama and a lot of vampire drama you need to read these now!!!
