The Last Circle is the story about a Washington D.C. journalist, Danny Casolaro, who investigated the theft of a revolutionary new software program that was the forerunner of artificial intelligence. It was called PROMIS, Prosecutor's Management Information System, and was developed for the U.S. Department of Justice to upgrade their case management tracking system.
Danny worked closely with Bill Hamilton, owner of INSLAW Company and developer of the PROMIS software, to locate and identify those responsible for modifying the software, installing a backdoor in the program, and then selling it worldwide. These shadowy activities allowed U.S. authorities and personnel to secretly monitor foreign intelligence operations and track overseas commercial transactions.
Danny soon learned more than he bargained for. The investigation led him into a labyrinth comprised of international spies, government officials, drug traffickers, mobsters, money launderers ... and unsolved murders dating back as far as 1981. He called this cabal the "Octopus."
In early August 1991, Danny filled his briefcase with documents and traveled to Martinsburg, Virginia to "bring back the head of the Octopus," according to his closest friends who have said he was "ecstatic" about something he had recently uncovered. Danny never came home. He was found dead at a Martinsburg hotel on August 10, 1991. The local coroner ruled his death a suicide and his body was embalmed even before his family was notified of his death. His documents and briefcase were missing and never recovered.
Three months after Danny's death, reporter Cheri Seymour began her journey down the investigative trail Danny left behind. One of the most provocative outcomes of this 18-year investigation was the discovery that, five days before his death, Danny had uncovered a connection between a former Director of International Affairs at the Department of Justice in Washington D.C., and the Cali Drug Cartel in Columbia.
Seymour provided that information to authorities in 1993, they followed up on that lead, and in 1995 the former Director was indicted for money laundering, drug conspiracy and racketeering. News of the indictment was published on the front page of the Washington Post, but the true story behind the case was never told ... until now. A detailed look into the recent high-profile arrest and release of a Mafia hit-man is also included, along with other tales of intrigue and corruption about Danny Casolaro's Octopus.
