Emmylou Harris's spirited 1982 live album captures the singer's vision of what country music could and should be: a driving cover of Hank Snow's "I'm Movin' On" finds a home next to Gram Parsons's "Return of the Grievous Angel," along with Bruce Springsteen's "Racing in the Streets" and the Everly Brothers' "So Sad to Watch a Good Love Go Bad." Harris gets into country rock as well as country blues, takes on a few ballads, and adds a memorable treatment of Carl Perkins's honky-tonker "Restless" as part of her own restless search for interesting songs to interpret with her signature evocative soprano. The tracks were recorded in several California honky-tonks and maintain a dancehall vibe. Harris brought along her ...

The tracks were recorded in several California honky-tonks and maintain a dancehall vibe. Harris brought along her Hot Band, including guitarist Frank Reckard, pedal steel player Steve Fishell, and rhythm guitarist Barry Tashian, as well as "shuffle king" drummer John Ware for the high-speed ride. LAST DATE produced chart hits with "I'm Moving On" and "Lost His Love On Our Last Date." The reissue features two bonus tracks, extensive liner notes, and photos contemporary with the recording. LAST DATE documents one of the best working country outfits of the era taking care of business and expanding the breadth of country music. --Kerry Dexter
All Music Guide - Jason Ankeny
Last Date offers a good indication of Harris' live sets with the Hot Band during the early '80s. Taking its title from her hit vocal version of the Floyd Cramer country standard, the record leans heavily on Harris favorites, in addition to covers of Buck Owens' "Buckaroo," Hank Snow's "I'm Movin' On," Neil Young's "Long May You Run" and Gram Parsons' "Return of the Grievous Angel."
