Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Reader interest never lags in a Cummings Western e.g., The Indian Fighter's Return, LJ 5/1/93. The action is fast and suspenseful, while the characters are convincing in deed and speech. In Arizona Territory in 1903, the Apaches have been secured on reservations, but trouble remains for the settlers in the form of outlaws who rob and kill at will. Two Arizona rangers assigned to help stamp out the threat are Wes Barnes and Jake Kenton. Barnes kills when necessary, while Kenton is a tad too enthusiastic about his work. They eventually separate because of Kenton's lust for killing. The ending is predictable, and an incipient romance does not pan out; perhaps Cummings forgot it in the excitement of wild chases and gun battles. Nonetheless, this exciting novel is highly recommended for libraries with active Western collections.-Sister Avila, Acad. of the Holy Angels, Minneapolis
Wes Lukowsky
During the first decade of the 1900s, a small band of lawmen known as the Arizona Rangers work to make the territory safe enough for statehood. Wes Barnes and Jade Kenton are Ranger partners, but their alliance is an uneasy one. Kenton, a veteran of the Spanish-American War and the charge up San Juan Hill, has the bloodlust. He'd much rather kill a suspect than arrest him. Barnes is sickened by the carnage. Kenton finally crosses the line and, though not prosecuted, is dismissed from the Rangers. Soon Barnes and Kenton cross paths--on opposite sides of the law. This is an entertaining variation on the old mismatched-partners plot. Usually the partners eventually come to like and respect each other, but here their dislike festers and turns to hate when circumstances make them enemies. A solid effort by a dependable western author.
