Overview

This is not to be confused with the like-titled -- and deeper digging -- compilations released as companions to editions of Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton's essential book on DJ history. A mixed, 60-track set from Ministry of Sound, this selection includes a handful of disco-era cuts but is rooted more in electronic post-disco R&B of the early '80s with a sampling of commercial house from the late '80s through 2013. For casual listeners who want it nonstop, sequenced, and mixed adequately, albeit without a great deal of thought, this should satisfy. It features a lot of deathless hits, including Marvin Gaye's "Got to Give It Up," A Taste of Honey's "Boogie Oogie Oogie," D Train's "You're the One for Me," Frankie Knuckles and Jamie Principle's "Your Love," S'Express' Rose Royce-sampling "Theme from S'Express," Inner City's Good Life," Basement Jaxx' "Rendez-Vu," and Duke Dumont's "100% (Need U)." It ends with MK's vocal edit of Storm Queen's "Look Right Through," an unlikely number one U.K. pop hit.
