Overview

A dramatic and exuberant fantasy adventure in the bestselling The Edge Chronicles series, embellished throughout with marvellous black and white illustrations

In this first Edgeworld adventure to feature Rook Barkwater, our budding hero lives in the network of sewer-chambers beneath Undertown, the bustling main city of the Edgeworld. He dreams of becoming a librarian knight – one of those sent out to explore the mysteries of their world. Somewhere out there lie the secrets of the past – including the lost floating city of Sanctaphrax -- and, maybe, hope for a future free of tyranny.

When his chance comes, Rook grabs it. Breaking all the rules, he sets out on a journey to the Free Glades and beyond. His luck and determination lead him from one peril to another until he encounters a mysterious character -- the last sky pirate -- and is thrust into a bold adventure that dares to challenge the might of the dreaded Guardians of the Night.

Editorial Reviews

The fifth installment of the Edge Chronicles features a plucky new protagonist. Rook Barkwater lives in the network of musky sewer chambers beneath Undertown, but he dreams of being a noble librarian knight commissioned to explore the mysteries of the world. When opportunity calls, he grabs it, perhaps injudiciously. He heads off to the Free Glades, launching himself on an adventure that he might not survive. High excitement fantasy for readers ages ten and up.

This fifth book in the Edge Chronicles features a bran new character, Rook. He is a young librarian who is selected to be one of the few who set out into the vast and precarious Deepwoods to study, explore, and eventually create an account of their experiences. If you have read the other books in the Edge Chronicles, then you know that the Deepwoods is no friendly place. Young Rook, then, is tossed into a world of adventure, peril, and wonder while traveling in the Deepwoods. Will he survive it all? Find out in this book, "The Last of the Sky Pirates"!

Now, the first three edge books were great, but the fourth goes back and talks about Twig's dad and everything. The fifth through seventh (and probably the eigth) are about a boy named Rook, who is seventy five years AFTER Twig's story. This makes the series a little confusing, but it is very imaginative and creative (the illustrations are great).

Although the series is pretty good I don't like how it jumps decades getting you confused.

Another fantastic voyage of the imagination and mind. I loved how some of the old characters are brought back into the story. 'Twig' and 'Coulcuape'. Great book.

The rest of the books in the chronicles are sooo good that I'm going to have to give this one 5 stars too. I can't wait till this one comes out. What new adventures lie ahead, ready for us to read about them.
