Overview

A dramatic and exuberant fantasy adventure in the bestselling The Edge Chronicles series, embellished throughout with marvellous black and white illustrations

In this first Edgeworld adventure to feature Rook Barkwater, our budding hero lives in the network of sewer-chambers beneath Undertown, the bustling main city of the Edgeworld. He dreams of becoming a librarian knight – one of those sent out to explore the mysteries of their world. Somewhere out there lie the secrets of the past – including the lost floating city of Sanctaphrax -- and, maybe, hope for a future free of tyranny.

When his chance comes, Rook grabs it. Breaking all the rules, he sets out on a journey to the Free Glades and beyond. His luck and determination lead him from one peril to another until he encounters a mysterious character -- the last sky pirate -- and is thrust into a bold adventure that dares to challenge the might of the dreaded Guardians of the Night.

Rook Barkwater, one of the apprentices chosen to make a dangerous journey to study in the Deepwoods, joins the sky pirate Captain Twig in opposing the Guardians of the Night and learns more about his own past.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The fifth installment of the Edge Chronicles features a plucky new protagonist. Rook Barkwater lives in the network of musky sewer chambers beneath Undertown, but he dreams of being a noble librarian knight commissioned to explore the mysteries of the world. When opportunity calls, he grabs it, perhaps injudiciously. He heads off to the Free Glades, launching himself on an adventure that he might not survive. High excitement fantasy for readers ages ten and up.
Publishers Weekly
In the fifth entry in the Edge Chronicles by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell, The Last of the Sky Pirates, Rook Barkwater, selected to study as an apprentice in the Deepwoods, hooks up with sky pirate Captain Twig, introduced in the launch title, Beyond the Deepwoods, bringing the series full circle. In a starred review, PW said of the first book, "The narrative will cast a spell over readers from the beginning." (Aug.) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
Rook Barkwater never expected to be much more than an under-librarian. But in a surprising twist of fate, he his chosen to train as a librarian-knight, a revered position reserved for the best and brightest. With two other librarian-knights-elect, he embarks on a journey, jumping from one peril to the next in an effort to reach the training ground. Along the way, Rook's determination and a dose of luck allow him to befriend mysterious creatures, learn to fly, discover the last of the sky pirate captains, and ultimately battle against the enemy of all--the Guardians of the night. Although this magical world is more challenging to enter than Hogwarts or Middle Earth, fantasy lovers will enjoy this fresh perspective and the inventive characters. This fifth book in "The Edge Chronicles" series is sure to delight those who have enjoyed the earlier installments; for others, it is probably best to begin with Book One in order to fully appreciate the intricacies of this magical environment and the epic struggle the characters are engaged in. Wonderful illustrations accompany each chapter and are just as fun as the text. 2005 (orig. 2002), David Fickling Books/Random House Children's Books, Ages 10 up.

School Library Journal
Gr 4-7-The Edge is filled with icky monsters, profoundly rotten villains, and shiny striving heroes, all with silly names such as muglumps, Orbix Xaxis, and Rook Barkwater. There are dangers behind every tree, mysterious fogs, stones that fly, and trolls and talking bears. In this fifth volume of the "Chronicles," Rook is a young under-librarian who is sent into the creepy Deepwoods to gather knowledge that might help the noble community of Knight-Librarians battle the evil Guardians of Night for control of the Edge. Sometimes Rook and his allies defeat the gluttonous logworms that devour everything in their path; at other times, the Guardians of the Night throw them into chains. Even Twig, hero of Beyond the Deepwoods, the first volume in the series, reappears to join the fray. Who will win? Does it really matter? These adventures pull readers along, and the pages flip by in no time. Riddell's antique-style illustrations add to the fun, depicting the characters' intricate costumes and crazy modes of transport. There's not a lot of substance here, but fans of Lemony Snicket, the "The Spiderwick Chronicles," and "Harry Potter" will devour it.-Walter Minkel, New York Public Library Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

This fifth book in the Edge Chronicles features a bran new character, Rook. He is a young librarian who is selected to be one of the few who set out into the vast and precarious Deepwoods to study, explore, and eventually create an account of their experiences. If you have read the other books in the Edge Chronicles, then you know that the Deepwoods is no friendly place. Chronicles About the Edge

Now, the first three edge books were great, but the fourth goes back and talks about Twig's dad and everything. The fifth through seventh (and probably the eigth) are about a boy named Rook, who is seventy five years AFTER Twig's story. This makes the series a little confusing, but it is very imaginative and creative (the illustrations are great).

    Awesome!

Another fantastic voyage of the imagination and mind. I loved how some of the old characters are brought back into the story. 'Twig' and 'Coulcuape'. Great book.

Twig is 70 years Old and Still ticking

Rook is a new character in this series, and yet, most of the characters are still old. It is sad though, for it reveals the sad fate of Twig's crew, and what happened to Twig. This book is the supposed 1st book in a 3 book spot in the series concerning Rook. And if you want to know sonething else, book 8 will be published September 1st in the UK.
