Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Hal Jordan aka a member of the Green Lantern Corps is traveling at incredible speed through the Milky Way galaxy powered by a small green ring that he wears. He was the Green Lantern for the sector of the universe that included the planet Earth. During his travels to obtain training Hal learns that he is powerless against the color yellow which represents fear. He reached the planet Oa, but before he could set foot on it Hal was part of a foursome off to do battle on the planet Thogo. They succeed in defeating the enemy and finally arrive at Oa, but once again they are off on another mission. The battles continue to be waged and Hal not only refuses to be subdued by the color yellow but he also manages to help other recruits overcome their fear. The five chapters are full of action and on pages that contain only text, certain words are printed in a special font and color to break up what would be large sections of text. For example, on one spread, a reader would find "Bang!" in big red letters, "Wham!" in big green letters, "Smash!" in big orange letters and "Boom!" in big yellow letters. Full page illustrations appear in every chapter. The closing spread provides many details about one of the characters and this is followed by brief biographies of the author and illustrators, a glossary, discussion questions, and writing prompts. A book that may have appeal to reluctant male readers. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
