Nishida Kitaro is the leading Japanese philosopher of the 20th century and is also the Founder of a loosely affiliated group of several generations of Japanese religious philosophers now known as the Kyoto School. While many readers are familiar with his early work , this is the definitive last work of Nishida written just before his death. The translation itself is not easily readable as Nishida's ideas are undoubtedly complex and translation from Buddhistic Japanese is often difficult if not impossible. Despite the difficulty, this short book gives a good sense as to Nishida's creativity and his ambition to formulate a religious philosophy which explicates the Zen Buddhism tradition in modern philsophically acceptable terms-- an effort which continues in the Kyoto till today.
