Overview

Latasha and the Little Red Tornado tells the story of Latasha Gandy, a precocious and inventive third-grader who lives in Pittsburgh with her hardworking mother and a naughty puppy named Ella Fitzgerald. At eight years old, Latasha cannot wait to grow up. Ella, on the other hand, absolutely refuses to! When Ella's antics push the Gandy's landlady, Mrs. Okocho, to her wits' end, Latasha realizes that she must turn her mischievous mutt into a model dog. Latasha enlists the help of a classmate and neighbor, Ricky, in her efforts to train Ella. Their friendship grows as Ricky joins the girls on their adventures in the park. But after Latasha and Ricky have a falling out, Latasha decides to take Ella out on her own, a choice that proves to have grave consequences. At turns hilarious and heartbreaking, this tale of friendship and maturity follows Latasha as she struggles with Ella, school, and her mother's absence from home.

Editorial Reviews

Kirkus Reviews
What's an 8-year-old with a working single mother and an energetic dog to do when her puppy's high energy (the "zoomies") threatens to try their landlady's patience? The premise is appealing: Third-grader Latasha must give her dog (Ella, named after Ella Fitzgerald) some exercise, but she is too young to go the park by herself. Often, she's cared for by Mrs. Okocho, the landlady, who is from Nigeria and who isn't particularly fond of dogs--especially those that take an unhealthy interest in her garden, as Ella does. Latasha must use some creative problem-solving skills to put up with babysitting from Mrs. Okocho and to care adequately for Ella, eventually resulting in a near-fatal accident for the puppy. Unfortunately, this debut is marred by some awkward writing, including dialogue that seems more adult than third-grader, presumably in order to get across some admittedly worthy lessons: "But telling fibs is wrong and definitely not a mature thing to do. It can be really hard to make the right choice sometimes!" The length and vocabulary seem suited for preteens, making it a mismatch with an 8-year-old protagonist. There are some bright spots, including a satisfying ending that's not too neat, but this is too long, and too clearly written with a grown-up's sensibility to have as much kid appeal as it could have had. (Fiction. 9-11)

    A must read!

I received an advance copy for review (I'm a teacher) and I must say, I was suprised to say the least. In an age where it is difficult to find age appropriate reading that is interesting and relatable, Scotto delivers a thoughtful, intelligent young lady that wants the best for her rampant puppy. If you have a child that needs an intelligent read and an appropriate lead character, this is the book. As a teacher, I see a LOT of garbage that shouldn't be in the hands of a young child, simply because they can understand it. This book feeds the brain and is still relevant to the age group that is meant to read it.

    A great new character

I received an advanced copy of this book, and I am sure glad that I did! I'm always looking for stories with a diverse, or multicultural cast of characters that I can recommend to my students. Latasha is a wonderful character, and her story has something for everyone. The author really seems to understand kids and the way they think. I can't wait for my young readers to dig in!

    Highly Recommended

This book not only engages the young reader, but a parent as well. If you have a child between 8-12 this book will resonate with you and your child. It conveys life lessons for both the child and parent. It has great humor, and is wonderfully written. Dgroup
