Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Lorraine Donohue Bonzelet
Multitasking is overwhelming and stressful for Samantha (Sam) Martone. She is not sleeping well. She is worried about a big science project, an article for the paper, daily homework, book reports, and her anonymous Dear Know-It-All column. To make matters worse, Sam’s secret love, Michael, and several schoolmates do not think her column is up to par. Sam likes to keep busy but is struggling to meet her deadlines and the expectations of her friends. Sam confides in her mother, who is supportive and gently gives advice. Sam and Michael realize their situations are similar when they talk through some of their worries. Wise creates characters that accurately portray the average, frazzled thirteen year old. Although the conversational style will entertain children eight or nine years old, the topics of waking in the middle of the night from worry, exhaustion, and stressful deadlines are geared toward middle school and may be slightly mature for some readers. Wise keeps the tone light despite the topics she covers. The novel teaches children about handling stress, proper sleeping habits, prioritizing, managing peer-pressure, and confiding in someone when the stress is too much. Geared to the female audience, it is recommended for children having trouble juggling school, friends, family, and extracurricular activities. It is a quick read that provides humor along with good advice. This is the eleventh book in the “Dear Know-It-All” series. Reviewer: Lorraine Donohue Bonzelet; Ages 8 to 12.

Meet the Author

Rachel Wise loves to give advice. When she’s not editing or writing children’s books, which she does full-time at a publisher in New York, she’s reading advice columns in newspapers, magazines, and blogs—and is always sure her advice would be better! Her dream is to someday have her own talk show, where she could share her wisdom with millions of people at once, but for now she’s happy to dole out advice in small portions in Dear Know-It-All books.
