Overview

This new book is a complete resource for clinicians, students, and academics working with students whose speech contains errors affecting [?], [ð], [s], [z], [l], Vocalic [r], Consonantal [r], [?], or [?]. These nine sounds typically are the last acquired by English speaking children, and are the sounds most likely to challenge school-aged students and non-native English speakers, both children and adults. It effectively fills the need for a resource that a student or clinician can turn to when treating a school-aged student or non-native English speaker who experiences difficulties with one or more late acquired sound.

Designed to make session planning more efficient and effective, this represents an excellent tool for the busy professional. Covering all background principles and specific applications, this powerful book-CD combination includes reproducible materials that are fully adaptable to suit individual client needs.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Cynthia Core, PhD (George Washington University)
Description: This resource provides background information and treatment materials, including well-organized word lists, for eight late-acquired English sounds. An accompanying CD provides printable versions of the text materials.
Purpose: This book seeks to provide a comprehensive resource for treatment of the eight sounds which are the most likely to be targeted in speech intervention. It succeeds in bringing together therapy principles and useful word lists and activities in one manual.
Audience: It is written for clinicians working with children with speech sound disorders. It fills a need for a handy reference for the most commonly treated sounds in speech intervention. The author is a well known child phonologist whose years of experience in both speech intervention and academic teaching come together to make this manual very clinician friendly.
Features: The book's strongest features are the word lists which are organized by an extensive number of phonetic environments as well as by conversation themes. The manual also includes many useful tools, such as screening and stimulability probes, recommended treatment activities, techniques for placement and shaping, and a chapter on integrating treatment sounds into language activities. Background principles are sufficient, though basic, and do not include information on current phonological intervention models. The book's printable speech exercises consist primarily of drill-type activities, such as imitation, and at times target words can seem forced and out of place. However, the comprehensive word lists and information on each sound are valuable assets for any clinician of any philosophy or level of expertise.
Assessment: The author's straightforward, easy to read style makes the background principles accessible to clinicians, and treatment suggestions and extensive word lists are practical. This book reaches far beyond traditional compilations of treatment words by target sound, and provides tools needed to plan effective intervention. It would be a welcome addition to a clinician's preferred references.
