Universal's Latest & Greatest Stars of Classical is a 3-CD package of vocal, instrumental, orchestral, and choral music, performed by many famous and not so famous artists. Among the household names are André Rieu, Katherine Jenkins, Charlotte Church, Lang Lang, Bryn Terfel, Kiri Te Kanawa, Mario Lanza, and José Carreras, but there are many more who are perhaps less recognizable, and prospective listeners may find many tracks are by relative unknowns. Stylistically, it is a sampling of some of the most popular classical, adult contemporary, and crossover music, so there is considerable flexibility of genre identification and no particular rationale for the selections, beyond the accessibility of the music. Perhaps the least satisfying aspect of the collection is the heavy reliance on brief excerpts from operas, films, and musicals, or short instrumental pieces that pop up alongside vocal numbers, dramatically changing the mood and flow of the discs. As a result, this isn't especially enjoyable as background music because of its unevenness and unpredictability. However, this set is aimed at a wide audience, and the scattershot program seems designed to refresh the memory of the label's roster of musicians, rather than to permit a deep appreciation of their work.
