Latin Beat: Club Caliente

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Alex Henderson
In the music world of the 1990s, it wasn't hard to find Latin versions of many major English-language trends. House and techno are a high priority on Latin Beat: Club Caliente, but two things separating it from non-Latin collections of dance music are the fact that many of the lyrics are in Spanish, and the artists' willingness to incorporate such styles as salsa, cumbia, nuevo flamenco, and merengue. While Raymond's "Mari Contigo" unites merengue with rap, and Umboza's ...

All Music Guide - Alex Henderson
In the music world of the 1990s, it wasn't hard to find Latin versions of many major English-language trends. Whether you were seeking ska-punk, adult contemporary, grunge, heavy metal or rap, it was easy to find a Spanish-language version. The focus of this collection is club and dance music with a Latin twist. While Raymond's "Mari Contigo" unites merengue with rap, and Umboza's "Sunshine" has an appealing nuevo flamenco/house flavor, Proyecto Uno's "Latinos" and Dino Latino's "Carmello" both blend techno with hip-hop, dancehall reggae, and salsa. The late Selena's "Techno Cumbia," meanwhile, isn't really a blend of techno and cumbia -- it's basically pop
ock with Spanish lyrics and a dance beat. The most interesting tune on the CD, however, is los Umbrellos' "No Tengo Dinero," which gives the Greek pop classic "Never on Sunday" a serious makeover and replaces the Greek lyrics with new Spanish lyrics. The Right Stuff provides no breaks between songs, thus turning this CD into a non-stop dance mix and giving the listener an appealing idea of what he/she might have heard in a dance club in Madrid, Buenos Aires, or Mexico City in 1999.
