Overview

The jokes may be silly—but the purpose of this collection isn’t! Children will laugh out loud at every jest even as they absorb some serious reading basics. How do you fix a gorilla robot? Use a monkey wrench. Why don’t bananas get lonely? They go around in bunches. What is it called when a queen has a sore throat? A royal pain in the neck. What did the egg say to the cook? You crack me up—and kids will agree 100 percent! Plus, witty illustrations enhance every cool comic line.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Humor has its place and sometimes it is visual, physical, or, as with this series of "Laugh-a-Long Readers," mostly a play on words. In this title, there does not seem to be any logic or truly helpful clues to arrive at the answers of the riddles/jokes posed. For example, "What has four wheels and roars down the road?" Answer, "A lion on a skateboard." That may be mildly amusing but not hilarious or particularly clever. Some of the jokes have been around for awhile—"What has four wheels and flies?" Answer—"A garbage truck." Since many of the jokes require good language skills (homonyms, synonyms and the like), the books in this series offer an opportunity to strengthen them. Teachers could make use of the books by posting a joke of the day on the chalkboard. However, in some cases the illustrations are the most amusing part of the joke. For those who are observant, the jokes are printed in a regular font while the answers appear in italic font. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
