Publishers Weekly
In Anthony-winner Hart's lively 20th Death on Demand mystery (after 2009's Dare to Die), more than one death in Broward's Rock, S.C., engages Annie Darling and her husband, Max. First, Click Silvester, a black teenager who hung out at the Haven, a teen activity center, apparently falls to his death from a wooden viewing platform in the woods. Later, someone shoots obnoxious Haven board member Booth Wagner on stage during an outdoor evening benefit for the center. Many had motives for killing Booth, including his stepson, Tim Talbot, who feared and hated him; his wife, Neva, who's curiously unmoved by his death; his former mistress, Jean Hughes, who was terrified of being fired as the Haven's director and becomes police chief Billy Cameron's prime suspect. A group of local ladies, led by mystery writer Emma Clyde, assist Annie and Max in the hunt for the real killer. Well-developed characters and a complex, fast-moving plot make for a satisfying read. On the small South Carolina barrier island of Broward's Rock lives Max and Annie Darling. Annie owns the mystery bookstore Death on Demand while Max runs an inquiry agency Confidential Commissions. Jean Hughes, director of Haven, a youth recreation center, is not having her contract renewed due to the lobbying of her former lover affluent and influential businessman Booth Wagner. Jean asks Max to help her keep her job because her sister is dying and they want to stay here. However, Booth succeeds in forcing Jean to give up her position. On the night she is to announce her resignation, someone kills Booth. The evidence mounts that Jean killed her ex lover, but both Darlings think otherwise as they believe Jean would never risk anything at that this time due to her beloved sibling's failing health as separation is unacceptable. Max and Annie learn that Booth made a myriad of enemies that include his family and ex wife. However, pressure on Max mounts when Annie and Booth's heir end up in the crosshairs of a killer. The Darling Death on demand mysteries are always a special treat because the investigation seems genuine with a plenty of suspects and the loving relationship between Max and Annie enriches the whodunit story lines. Carolyn Hart's latest cozy is filled with strong characterizations including a killer in plain sight, but readers will find it almost impossible to determine who that person is even with clues also in plain sight. Carolyn Hart provides another Darling regional mystery. Harriet Klausner

Mystery fans will be thrilled with this latest installment in the phenomenally successful DEATH on DEMAND series from Carolyn Hart. Returning to Broward's Rock--a South Carolina sea island that provides the setting for the novel--feels like coming home. Annie is still running her mystery bookstore while her husband Mas runs an inquiry agency called Confidential Commissions. Murder shatters this idyllic setting and both Annie and Max spring into action to find the culprit. Along with local mystery writer Emma Clyde, they cast a wide net and the suspects emerge one by one. The plot, as always, is intricate and compelling. Carolyn Hart has a magical way of drawing out the suspense, dropping just enough clues to keep the reader guessing while she moves the action along at a breathless pace. It's easy to see why she's called "The American Agatha Christie."

Laughed 'Til He Died - Review by Martha A. Cheves, Author of Stir, Laugh, Repeat Jean's harsh sobs brought Max's secretary, whose heart was as big as her beehive hairdo, to his office door. Summer-bright in a yellow tunic and white caprice, Barb looked at him questioningly. As awkward as most men in the face of feminine meltdown, Max cleared his throat. "How about some iced tea, Jean? Hey, Barb, bring us some of your special fruit tea and good lemon pie." Jean using a handkerchief provided by Max, wiped her face, leaving purplish smudges atop puffy redness. She looked shyly at Barb when she returned. Barb placed a try with two big tumblers and two plates on the desk. "Goji berries and guava, my own private blend. Guaranteed to refresh. And lemon pie made this morning." Jean Hughes had just stepped into Max Darling's office at the Confidential Commissions. Jean, who is the director of a youth recreation center called the Haven, came to seek Max's help. One of the directors was in the process of acquiring enough votes to have her dismissed and she didn't want to go down without a fight. Since Max's specialty is in solving problems, he takes her on as a client. Annie Darling, Max's wife, owns a mystery bookstore called Death on Demand. At first, she's not comfortable with Max taking Jean as a client. But that changed with the death of a young member from the Haven and the death of one of the Haven's directors with Jean being the police's number one suspect. I've read both of Carolyn Hart's Bailey Ruth books and loved them. I'm patiently waiting for her to write a 3rd. This is the first of her Death on Demand books that I've had a chance to read and I have to say I love it too. Carolyn Hart holds you in suspense until the end. She gives no clues throughout the book allowing you to guess at who the killer really is. In fact, she actually had me believing that the killer just might be Jean Hughes. Did Carolyn Hart lead me on a wild goose chase throughout the whole book? I'll never tell. Read Laughed 'Til He Died and find out for yourself.
