School Library Journal
K-Gr 2Lavender Moon, who runs the New Moon Caf, longs to see the places that the mysterious late-night bus comes from and goes to. One day she decides to trade places with bus driver Toby Swan. They swap bus for caf and Lavender takes off to explore the countryside. Lightheartedly, she visits small towns, lakes, mountains, and deserts, stopping to enjoy what each new place may offer. At last, she arrives at the ocean and settles down for the summer. Then, come fall, she misses cooking for others and converts the bus into a traveling caf so that she can continue to explore the coast, paint, and cook for people as well. Cheerful, breezy illustrations in gouache, oil pastels, and colored pencils are somewhat reminiscent of Robert McCloskey's work and convey the carefree, upbeat tone of the story.Sally R. Dow, Ossining Public Library, NY
