The book, an updated and expanded version of the previous (fourth) edition, is divided into seventeen sections, covering such topics as law office organization, management, and administration, support personnel, office polices, personnel policies and benefits, office security and emergency procedures, financial management, file systems, technology, and communications systems. The book contains numerous sample forms and documents, as well as extensive bibliographies. A CD containing the entire text of the manual is included, allowing customization of the manual for particular user needs.
The 1982 first and 1992 second editions were titled ; the title changed with the 1996 third. The guide helps large and small law firms design their own staff manuals. Significant changes in law office technology have become widespread since then, and the fourth edition encompasses some of the personnel problems encountered by firms of all sizes because of increased technology use and related changes such as the proliferation of in-house technology departments. Several other sections were also revised, and new material on the COBRA law was added. The pages are not bound, but punched for a three-hole binder.
