Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Readers will surely feel sorry for Lawrence, a frustrated hedgehog who longs for a taste of his favorite dessert: coconut cream pie. But in order to whet his taste buds, he must go to the Grand Cafe, and Lawrence isn't brave enough to venture out of his house. It seems that something scary happens during every visit, and the harried creature ends up snapping himself into a ball and rolling away--before he can finish his dessert. When even familiar household objects begin to resemble pies, Lawrence dons his debonair red bow tie and resolutely sets out for the Grand Cafe. His courage pays off and he devours a huge piece of pie, oblivious to the comical chaos breaking out around him. Shy children who share Lawrence's fears will find a friend in this endearing hedgehog, but even the bravest little ones will enjoy Stoeke's ( Minerva Louise) upbeat tale and her bold, delightfully unaffected illustrations. Ages 3-6. (May)

PreS-Gr 1-- Lawrence is a timid hedgehog with a passion for coconut cream pie. (Indeed, his entire house is decorated in pie motif.) Luckily, the Grand Cafe is close by, but it's such a beehive of activity that something invariably causes him to curl into a ball and roll home in fright. He tries busying himself with household chores, but his sweet tooth gives him no peace. Determinedly, he dresses and makes his way to the cafe, ordering his heart's delight. This time he savors each delicious morsel, oblivious to the total bedlam around him. Framed on each page with heavy black marker, the clean graphic line drawings, largely in primary colors, are fresh, lively, and appealing. Lawrence makes an engaging hero, but the story itself just doesn't cut it. There is nothing to substantiate his sudden metamorphosis into a self-assured, fearless individual, and readers will be left wondering how the day described was different from any other. Much like meringue, this is all looks, no substance. --Luann Toth, School Library Journal
