Overview

A couple of years ago, Ali Smith had an inspiration. She decided that the time had come to make an “intensely personal and sincere piece of art” that would honor the women whose work she respected and whose lives had had an impact on her as a woman and on the world as a whole. So, one by one, she began to contact each of these outrageous, courageous, and influential women and invite them to be part of her project. She named it Laws of the Bandit Queens after Phoolan Devi, an Indian woman who rebelled from childhood against everything her culture demanded of her.

After two years of photography sessions and interviews in every thinkable location, from a rooftop in New York City to the women’s ward of a prison, Ali’s work is done. The result is a fun and inspiring collection of portraits—in words and pictures. Each of these incredible women offers a law for women and girls to live by.

Freeda George Foreman: Pure passion is achieved by revving up the heart, soul, mind, and spirit. Pure passion is pure power. You are bigger than life; you are unlimited.

Alice Walker: I am certain that we were meant to be creative, to make love, to sing and dance and play. Everything else was dreamed up for us.

Jane Pratt: Another woman’s success is a success for us all.

Amy Sedaris: Laughter through the tears.

Laws of the Bandit Queens is an amazing journey and essential reading for every woman or girl, and as Ali says in the introduction, “a celebration of original thought and the bravery it takes to live accordingly.”

This is a deliciously eclectic gaggle of great women, captured in memorable photos, and inspirational prose. King has gone out of her way to include as many fabulous women as she can. No other book you own is likely to include both t.v. pioneer Linda Ellerbee and punk rock potentate Lydia Lunch. You'll meet women you didn't know, and wish you did! A little jet pack of estrogen inspiration!

Ali Smith captures everything I have ever dreamed of being put into one book for those of us who are floundering out here in this sometimes very cookie cutter world. Through the exquisite design of these pages and the incredible stories and quotes of these women told through Ali, any person reading this book will definitely be able to relate in one way or another. I found myself on several occasions wanting to jump up and scream, "Yeah! That is how *I* feel"! Finally, it is in written form!" I certainly cannot wait until her next creation! Until then, I consider this book my constant companion. Treat yourself and get this book today!

I am the proud mother of two Bandit Queens. This book is the PERFECT gift for any woman, young or old. I've already purchased 4 copies and have given 3 away as gifts. I want every woman I know to see this fabulous book. --The photographs seem to capture these amazing women in action. --Smith's text is personal and intriguing, it made me feel like I was there during her interviews! --The 'Laws' are everything I've been trying to teach my daughters since the day they were born. Every time I sit down to just 'page' through this amazing book, I look up and an hour has gone by. I feel empowered every time I pick it up. I can't wait to see what's next from this amazing author/photographer!

I don't know about you but I am always curious about other women. So this is how it started. I picked up a copy a the laws of bandit queens out of sheer curiosity. Hey, If there is a word of wisdom uttered by another woman out there, I'm game. The kaleidoscope of colors on the cover attracted me to it like a kid in a candy store. This book is more than eye candy, let me tell you. Life when you're a woman ain't no bowl of cherries and we all know it. But the women photographed in The laws of the bandit queens each have a simple message. Simple but true. They are like warriors full of dignity . They just rock. The photos are definetly taken by a woman. They do not insult my intelligence... The pictures are modern and colorful. The message is sharp. The photos beautiful. It's the perfect metaphore for a woman really. We may be beautiful, but make no mistake. We are as tough as nails and as smart as it gets. I just loved the book. I really can't wait to see more.
