Overview

Newly licensed attorney Aspen Wilde joins Denver's largest law firm to discover that an attractive, up-and-coming associate mysteriously vanished several months earlier and is presumed dead. She secretly embarks upon a brilliant but dangerous plan to trap the killer, only to find herself increasingly intertwined in a complex web of murders involving several different women killed in very different ways.

As she frantically searches for answers, not only to trap the killer but also to keep herself from getting trapped, her hunt collides with the ongoing investigation of Denver homicide detective Nick Teffinger, a man who has strayed into the edgy world of a beautiful suspect to find out if she is a murderer, a target, or something else altogether.

With the stakes suddenly higher than they could have imagined, Aspen and Teffinger find themselves spiraling deeper and deeper into a deadly vortex where nothing is as it seems and time is running out.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In Jagger’s less than compelling 11th thriller featuring hunky Denver homicide cop Nick Teffinger (after 2010’s Pretty Little Lawyer), Teffinger is tempted to cross the line into unprofessional behavior after meeting murder suspect Davica Holland, a stunner who’s most comfortable while wearing the least amount of clothing. The corpse of Holland’s former lover, Angela Pfeiffer, has been discovered in a shallow grave, bearing multiple stab wounds. Meanwhile, attorney Aspen Wilde, a new associate at a prestigious law firm, is stunned to learn that the woman she most admired at the firm, Rachel Ringer, vanished without a trace almost half a year earlier. Aspen can’t help putting herself in danger by doing some amateur sleuthing into Rachel’s disappearance. The narratives of their separate inquiries alternate with the perspective of Jack Draven, introduced early on, as he plans his next abduction. Readers should be prepared for underdeveloped characters and a paucity of surprises as well as frequent scenes of sadistic violence against women. (Nov.)
Library Journal
Newly minted attorney Aspen Wilde goes to work for the Denver law firm where she had interned the previous summer, but when she looks for the one nice lawyer she had befriended, Aspen learns that the woman has disappeared. The partners don't seem very concerned, so Aspen decides to investigate, jeopardizing her job and possibly her life. Meanwhile, homicide detective Teffinger thinks he has a serial killer on his hands when a mass grave is found, which conveniently clears his first suspect, Davica Holland. Rich, gorgeous Davica has a major crush on the detective—and he's not exactly fighting her off. Bad guy Draven has a chivalrous side, which comes out when he meets Gretchen, a hooker with a heart and a hard right hook. These three disparate story lines are told in these alternating voices and eventually become intertwined. VERDICT The pacing is relentless in this debut, a hard-boiled sexual slasher novel with a shocking ending, but the characters are more like caricatures. The supershort chapters will please those who enjoy a James Patterson-style page-turner. [See Prepub Alert, 8/1/11.]—Stacy Alesi, Palm Beach Cty. Lib. Syst., Boca Raton, FL
Kirkus Reviews
The latest from lawyer turned writer Jagger follows a particularly nasty set of murders set against the beauty of the Colorado countryside. Aspen Wilde, who despite her stripper moniker is a nosy new associate at a big law firm, loses no time diving into trouble on her first day at the new job. That's when Aspen discovers her former mentor at the firm, Rachel Ringer, has disappeared. The young lawyer decides to defy her bosses and investigate anyway, which complicates things. Meanwhile, Nick Teffinger, a cop who drinks gallons of coffee, urinates at outdoor crime scenes and enjoys an odd arrangement with a gorgeous bisexual who is also a potential suspect in one of the murders, stays busy digging up dead women. As Nick and his partner, Sydney Heatherwood, slowly close in on the killer, the bodies pile up, often courtesy of amoral killer Jack Draven, who circles new victims just ahead of the police. As Draven closes in on his latest target, the tension tightens and builds. Despite an intriguing plot, the book possesses major flaws: The author comes from the tell-not-show school of writing and is relentless in describing the characters down to their ages and wardrobes, and many passages are nothing more than a series of sentence fragments strung together. Jagger's cops can be uninspired and uninspiring, but the well-crafted story line still makes this a worthwhile read. Stuffed with gratuitous sex and over-the-top violence, this novel has a riveting plot but could have benefited from better editing.
