Lazy Dog, Vol. 2

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
DJ tag team Lazy Dog -- comprised of Everything But the Girl's Ben Watt and his partner Jay Hannan -- spin out a second volume of low-key deep house of the sort that's made their Sunday night London club so popular. Watt, who commandeers Disc 1, dishes out tracks from Lucy Pearl and Jon Cutler, plus his own mixes of Sade and Sunshine Anderson; Hannan counters with a disc chock-full of underground names like Benjamin Diamond, Andy Caldwell, and Phunkie Souls.

All Music Guide - Bradley Torreano
Featuring two CDs of a continuous dance mix, Lazy Dog, Vol. 2 is an interesting collection of sparse, ethereal house and techno that builds a lot of momentum from some rather hollow tracks. Most of the songs here range from up-tempo jams to low-key house tracks, but there is an air of sadness and emptiness revolving around the mix that doesn't affect the energy of the songs, but does change the mood from a typical techno disc. The first disc, mixed by Ben Watt, is more oriented toward this style of techno. His mix is held together by the beat, which stays constant throughout with only minor changes. Jay Hannan is the brain behind the second disc, and he takes a similar approach with slightly more energetic results. The common theme between both albums may not appeal to those who like their techno with more substance, and admittedly this is rather boring when taken out of the club context. But these are very good mixes that work nicely on the dancefloor; just understand that this isn't the typical "Block Rockin' Beats" approach that many mix discs take.

    A true gem

I think Bradley Torreano completely missed this one completely...here's my review: Following up on their debut effort [something AMG still lacks], Ben and Jay demonstrated that they had more in their pockets than some clever mixing and Tracey Thorn's voice to make for excellent dance music. Their sophmore, and unfortunately final effort is a must for any true afficionado of house-flavored music. The taste varies from soulful to latin but never do these two miss a beat or an opportunity to make a clever addition to the mix. From the uptempo and groovy intro of "It's Yours," the first disc, mixed by Ben Watt, starts a vibe of energy and soul associated with some of the best in house music. The later tracks maintain the pace while the last 2 tracks and the first tracks of disc 2 transition into a completely different vibe. Jay takes what Ben offered and twists it into a latin and deep house groove that takes on a life of its own. It will bear listening to in the club, the living room or the car - high praise, indeed. Having directed the mix upward, he returns you to earth with a painfully wistful number, "Summer," that leaves you wanting more, or pressing the repeat button.

    Latin infused deep house duo

I practically busted my rump groovin' to Lazy Dog's first double cd. This is a strong follow up effort. I went to their show in SF last Sunday and they do not dissappont live either. Their music is evolving as well. Less latin house on this but equally listenable and danceable. Good stuff.

    Who is Bradley Torreano???

Bradley, dude - one of the most embarrasing reviews I've read in some time... do you even KNOW what techno is? 'Cause there ain't NONE of it on this double album. It's deep house fella, and you're right, that is different from "block rockin' beats". Muppet. Stick to yer Chemical Brothers and Fat Boy Slim eh, and leaving writing the reviews to people who actually know the difference between different styles of music. Unbelievable.
