I clienti sono sempre gli stessi, di giorno studenti di ritorno da scuola, di notte delinquenti e prostitute. Ma un giorno le cose per lui cominciano a cambiare: in un palazzo disabitato ormai da anni compaiono Judith e Naomi, una giovane donna bianca e sua figlia. Per Sepha il loro arrivo rappresenta un nuovo inizio. La ragazzina passa con lui interi pomeriggi, leggendo I fratelli Karamazov seduta sul bancone del negozio. Tra i due non ci sono parole superflue, solo una complicità segreta e silenziosa, e la volontà di colmare quel vuoto che prende alla gola e che a volte non fa dormire. Una sera poi Judith lo invita a cena a casa e qualcosa si riaccende nel cuore di Sepha. Ma la realtà a volte è un muro contro cui i sogni si frantumano e Sepha comprende che la libertà è un diritto per cui dovrà continuare a lottare sempre, anche lontano dalle mine e dai morti del suo paese.

Dinaw Mengestu

Dinaw Mengestu was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in 1978. He is the recipient of a fellowship in fiction from the New York Foundation for the Arts and a Lannan Literary Award, and received a "5 under 35" Award from the National Book Foundation. His first novel, The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears, was named a New York Times Notable Book and awarded the Guardian First Book Award and the Los Angeles Times Art Seidenbaum Award for First Fiction, among numerous other honors. He lives with his wife and son in Paris.
