Children's Literature - Kathleen Karr
For the first time ever de Saint-Exupery's beloved philosophical novella has been transformed into a pop-up book. The fact that the book is only available in a French-language edition should be irrelevant to any true aficionado of the work. The original text is reproduced without abridgment in 64 pages with nearly all of the author-illustrator's watercolors literally springing into glorious life. How marvelous to lift a flap of copy and find the Little Prince's Turkish astronomer behind a three-dimensional telescope in 1909 in the act of discovering B-612, the odd little asteroid-planet the Prince calls home; or see the Prince's dreaded baobab tree expand to its full height and girth. Best of all is to watch the Little Prince in flight with his sparrows. As the French publicity puts it, each page is animated with such "virtuosity and delicacy, that all the poetry of de Saint-Exupery is revealed." The hype is true. The volume is worth possessing in its own right—but consider how useful it could be for French language classes! Reviewer: Kathleen Karr

Lovely pop-up illustrations and a joy to experience

This French classic, recreated, still maintains the ephemeral elements of the original. The experience of reading becomes an adventure in miniature, on a world I wish I could be a part of. For French speakers/readers, it is the perfect gift. For English speakers/readers, the English version is available and is equally beautiful. But the French one offers a special return to the author's original intent.
