Note: You can save over 60% on John C. Maxwell's four bestselling 101 series guides -- Relationships 101, Equipping 101, Attitude 101, and Leadership 101 -- when you buy them together as the one-volume Barnes & Noble exclusive edition REAL Leadership: The 101 Collection (0785288449).
Publishers Weekly
This diminutive tome is a particularly sketchy treatise on the already vague subject of leadership, stitched together with excerpts from The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership and other Maxwell books and featuring an ad at the back directing readers to a Web site where they can buy one of the author's longer works. Maxwell's themes-don't just pull rank, don't sweat the small stuff, establish rapport with co-workers, "empower" underlings-are commonplaces of leadership lore, couched in aphorisms ("The boss says 'I'; the leader, 'we'"), pseudo-statistics ("Twenty percent of your priorities will give you 80 percent of your production") and bromides ("If you lack vision, look inside yourself"). But in distilling this wisdom, the nitty-gritty that might make it useful has been boiled off, leaving readers to grapple unaided with bullet-pointed truisms like "Deal wisely with difficult people." Perfunctory leadership profiles of usual suspect Theodore Roosevelt, Princess Di, executives and football notables scarcely flesh out the meager intellectual content of this book, which seems, more than anything, like a $10 congrats card for the recently promoted.(Sept. 10) Copyright 2003 Cahners Business Information.

Young people either after a graduation or some other similar event are told that 'You can do anything you want in life if you set your mind to it. Or told to be a leader and not a follower. These sentiments are good, but many times that young person is left with no real 'TOOLS' on how to become that 'LEADER'. Dr. Maxwell in his concise book 'Leadership 101' gives the reader a 'summer course', if you will, on the essentials of leadership at all angles. These essential tools focus on the core of leadership development. What makes this book a must read is that the material is presented is such a way that the mind easily absorbs and creates a firestorm within that helps the reader to find purpose, direction, and vision. This book is a must for those who not only aspire to lead but to do so wholeheartedly and successfuly.

Thinking I had heard all there was to know about leadership, I picked up a copy of Maxwell's book and couldn't put it down. Five hundred pages of leadership, common sense, and knowledge crammed and condensed into a pocket sized 108 pages. I work daily with many talented young leaders in the scouting program that are working toward or have achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. I was so impressed with the lessons in 'Leadership 101', that I now present a copy of it with the Eagle Scout Award to any of my Scouts that has attained the high honor.

John Maxwell dispenses conmmon-sense advice for the aspiring leader. If you want to check whether you have what it takes to be a leader, this is a good book. If you want to be the best leader you can be, read Optimal Thinking by Dr. Rosalene Glickman, where you learn how to use Optimal Thinking consistently to be your best, exercise optimal personal leadership and then optimize others. Being your best, having the right vision, finding the right people to wholeheartedly commit to the vision and then bringing out the best from them, is what Optimal leadership is all about. Read both of these books, and give them to every member of your organization.

This is a good book for professionals or students who might not be directly related to management. It gives the reader a quick view of leadership tools than can be used to improve efficiency. I consider it more a pocket book than a textbook.

I picked up this book because I was frustrated with the leadership of the company, but ended up learning how I could be a leader. Terrific, encouraging wisdom for someone just realizing their potential.

This book was selected as a group project in a college management class, and I can say without reservation that this little book has some of the most eye-opening commonsense advise I have come across. It is a book that I will read again and again.

Maxwell's book is a home run. This is an excellent collection of remarks from business leaders across the world. All of them can be used in various work and personal situations in our lives. Read one a day to stay on top of your leadership ability.

It was common sense, but good to keep as a reference.
