Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Vicki Ann Moss, DNSc, MS, BSN, RN (University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh)
Description: In this book, the authors describe ways to effectively integrate leadership roles and management functions which are accomplished through an experiential learning approach. The previous edition was published in 2009.
Purpose: The purpose is to help nursing students and practicing nurses develop critical thinking through experiential leadership and management mock exercises. This is to better prepare them for management positions from reflection and contemplation of decisions made in a safe environment.
Audience: Although geared mainly for undergraduate nursing students, the book also could be a very good resource for nurses desiring to pursue management. The authors have been in management positions and have taught leadership and management over the past 30 years.
Features: The 25 chapters are divided into seven units: 1) The Critical Triad: Decision Making, Management, and Leadership; 2) Foundation for Effective Leadership and Management: Ethics, Law, and Advocacy; 3) Roles and Functions in Planning; 4) Roles and Functions in Organizing; 5) Roles and Functions in Staffing; 6) Roles and Functions in Directing; and 7) Roles and Functions in Controlling. The book has a strong balance of theory and real-world scenarios as well as an appendix that gives solutions to selected learning exercises. Each chapter includes best practices based on new research, learning exercises, a summary of key concepts, and web links. New content includes an introduction of the Stages of Change and the Pathway to Excellence models and expanded discussions of chaos theory, bullying, and horizontal violence in the workplace.
Assessment: This updated edition is filled with theory as well as real-world exercises for students to practice their leadership and management decision-making skills. This is a very interactive book and the skills can be used in any healthcare setting. The numerous student and instructor resources enhance its appeal and usefulness.

Excellent text. Entering the nursing profession after twenty plus years in design and advertising. I found this text to be concise, informative, and useful. It was truly a refreshing read. I am now a senior in nursing school, and many of the textbooks I have been required to slog through for my nursing education have been insipid and long-winded. Authors seem to enjoy hearing themselves speak about their nursing experience without getting to the point of teaching me something useful. Marquis and Huston connect common sense leadership concepts to the nursing profession.
