It doesn’t start with a certain position.
It doesn’t start with finding followers.
It definitely doesn’t start with a group of people electing you to be their leader.
The real secret to developing strong, lasting leadership starts with YOU learning how to lead YOU. Because the people whom you’ll eventually lead are wondering: If I can’t trust you to lead YOU, how can I trust you to lead ME?
There is one distinguishing characteristic that separates effective and ineffective leaders more than any other – the intentional effort to lead oneself well before trying to lead others well. The thing is, leading yourself first is as important for the leader of Fortune 500 Company as it is for the student who leads his or her club at school. Most leaders fail, not because of the way they lead others, but because of the way they lead themselves.
In Leadership Starts With You, Tim Milburn explains how to:
- Keep the promises you make to yourself as a way to keep the promises you make to others.
- Develop a disciplined framework to your life.
- Apply The Rhodium Rule – the one rule that tells you why self-leadership is so important.
- Create a growth P.L.A.N. that actually works.
- Get the most value out of each day.
- Take responsibility for your life rather than accept it.
- Assess your own character to identify your own blind spots.
- Capitalize on improving your physical health to improve all other areas of your life.
- Take an authentic look at your life and approach your shortcomings with humility.
- Lead yourself in front of others to develop influence with others.
In addition, this book provides the read with a variety of tools, assessments, and practical action steps to put to work immediately in one's life.
Tim Milburn has figured out his place in this world. It's developing student leaders. His personal goal each day is to develop lifelong leaders one student at a time. From his early experiences as "line monitor" in the third grade to his daily contact with students who are engaged in growing their influence, Tim invests his energies into motivating, resourcing, and equipping young leaders.
Tim currently serves as the Director of Campus Life at Northwest Nazarene University, located just outside of Boise, Idaho. His main role is to develop leadership opportunities and advise the students who fill those positions. Taking the lessons learned from his real life experiences, Tim continually writes and creates resources both for his own students and for those who are involved in the work of student leadership development.
Tim is a sought after speaker to students and student leaders for a variety of conference, retreat, and workshop settings. He posts a number of articles and helpful tools on his personal website, timmilburn.com. He also writes and designs useful forms and worksheets that enhance organization and productivity. All of Tim's materials can be found under the "Resources" tab of his website.
Tim makes his home in Eagle, Idaho with his wife and four children. When he's not crafting his latest project on his Mac he is usually involved in coaching one of his kids sports teams or playing golf. He is currently working through the popular workout phenomenon known as P90X2 and it is transforming the way he thinks and acts toward eating right and exercising.
