Overview

It was a balmy California evening. I had gone for a jog before I was to speak at a leadership conference. I still can't recall how I got there, but I found myself sitting on a curb weeping uncontrollably. I couldn't tell if it took place suddenly or gradually, but I knew something had broken inside. I remember lifting my trembling hands and asking out loud, "What in the world is happening to me?"

In Leading on Empty, Wayne Cordeiro candidly shares his experience of burnout with the hope that it will encourage others headed down the same path. He was able to get back in touch with his life, get back in proper balance, and allow God to reenergize his spirit in a way that propelled him forward to greater levels of service. Learn from his experience how you can continue a fruitful ministry. Better yet, take advantage of Wayne's helpful advice early on and avoid burnout altogether.

What People Are Saying

Rhett Smith
"Recently I read the book Leading on Empty: Refilling Your Tank and Renewing Your Passion by Wayne Cordeiro, who is the Senior Pastor of New Hope Christian Fellowship in Honolulu, Hawaii. Wayne's book is a great read, and it's not only very authentic, vulnerable and insightful, but he provides some great steps and resources for those who may be suffering through burnout and depression.... This is such an important topic, and I think one that needs to be talked about more in church ministry, especially among leaders. But it must not only be talked about, but action must be taken to move leaders to a more healthy place of leadership. If Christian leaders do not model a healthy life, then what exactly are they modeling?

Wayne helps leaders assess what burnout and failure looks like, but he also provides a roadmap for how they can get back on track. His seven hard lessons seem obvious, but unfortunately they don't become obvious except in hindsight for many of us.

Wayne also does a great job of talking about some actions that one can take such as sabbaticals, and he provides some important resources (counseling centers, camps, retreats, books, etc.) for leaders to access. I think if more leaders would read this book, and learn some important lessons ahead of time, as well as possibly finding a partner in their own burnout (such as Wayne), then they will find themselves in a much more healthy leadership position than before."--(Rhett Smith, Leadership Network (LeadNet.org))

Awesome book to refocus on your calling and understanding where burnout comes from.

I'm an A/G minister in Puerto Rico and I experienced the burnout at a serious level once. I saw the symptoms coming up recently and was afraid on going again through that road. This book came sent from heaven to open the eyes of my soul and focus in the 5% and not the 95. I recommend this book for every pastor, leader and future ones coming in to ministry to read. There are some things that are not learn in seminary. Only walking with our Heavenly father and the experiences we have with him on the way will teach us in how to refill our tanks. I'll use this book for a upcoming conference in our men's ministry at church.

Honest Help for Leaders to Finish Well

As a pastor of 30 years I can highly recommend this book to you. It hits me at a critical time or recalibration in my own life. My only regret is that I did not have this about 20 years ago. In "Leading On Empty", Wayne Cordeiro is the type of leader many of us aspire to be. He has the goods! In this book he writes out of his personal experience with burnout a few years ago.
It is not often that those who go through such seasons end up with the privilege of continuing to lead and serve well. I am on my second read and using many of the lessons here as the basis for the recalibrating I am doing - it is a goldmine. I am also buying copies to give to younger secular and religious leaders I know. If you are looking for a clinical thesis on burnout, this may not be it, but if you have been looking for practical guidance now and preventive measures for down the road, this is it. If you want to lead well and finish well - please get this book.
