Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Captain Nemo! The Invisible Man! Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde! Intrepid explorer Alan Quartermain! These and other amazing heroes of the Victorian age unite to save the world in Alan Moore's legendary tale, the inspiration for the 2003 Sean Connery film.
Publishers Weekly
Acclaimed comics author Moore (Watchmen) has combined his love of 19th-century adventure literature with an imaginative mastery of its 20th-century corollary, the superhero comic book. This delightful work features a grand collection of signature 19th-century fictional adventurers, covertly brought together to defend the empire. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen comprises such characters as Minna Murray (formerly Harker), from Bram Stoker's Dracula; Robert Louis Stevenson's Dr. Jekyll (and his monstrous alter ego, Mr. Hyde); and Jules Verne's Captain Nemo, restored to the dark, grim-visaged Sikh Verne originally intended. There's also Hawley Griffin, the imperceptible hero of H.G. Well's The Invisible Man, and Allan Quartermain, the daring adventurer of King Solomon's Mines and other classic yarns by H. Rider Haggard. It's 1898, and these troubled adventurers are spread around the globe, in the midst of one pickle or another. Quartermain is found near death, delirious in a Cairo opium den; the perverse Griffin is captured terrorizing an all-girls school (leaving behind a series of mysterious pregnancies); and the gruesome Mr. Hyde is rescued from the mob set to kill him at the end of Stevenson's classic novel. This collection of flawed and gloomy heroes is recruited to fight a criminal mastermind (a notorious 19th-century literary villain) intent on firebombing the East End of London. The book also includes "Allan and the Sundered Veil," a rip-snorting, prose time-travel story starring Quartermain and written in the manner of the 19th-century "penny dreadful." Moore and O'Neill have created a Victorian era Fantastic Four, a beautifully illustrated reprise of 19th-century literary derring-do packed with period detail, great humor and rousing adventure. (Feb.) Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
Library Journal
In the waning days of the Victorian era, a cast of five agents is instructed to save England. Each agent had been a respected member of society, but for various reasons (divorce, drug addiction) they have all dropped out of public favor. Whom they work for is uncertain; the group's leader, Miss Murray, believes that it is the famed detective Sherlock Holmes, back from the dead. Against an atmosphere that is both exciting and repressive, Moore and O'Neill have superimposed a drama that is inventive and suspenseful. The script is full of wit and literary references at one point a seaman instructs his captain ("Nemo") to "Call me Ishmael" and the illustrations charm. Highly recommended for public libraries. A great book by Alan Moore

Anyone who likes Watchmen yet wants to try out something a bit different should check out TLEG. The quality/detail of the drawings coupled with the wit of Alan Moore makes for a great read.

    It's cool, but be warned.

I bought this book because I'm a big fan of the movie. But the book (like all other books that turn movie) is nothing like the movie. Along with a different story plot and different roles that characters play, this book is very, VERY graphic. Guts and gore provided by the remarkable Mr. Hyde, and if you're easily upset by racist comment then don't read this book. You have been warned.

    Review

Never before have I laughed so hard at a graphic novel before. Alan Moore shows his capacity for remembering details of classic fiction and his ability to blend them together in a seamlessly constructed action and adventure story.

    Suppliment to The Original Texts

This is a great graphic novel and spurned the movie of several years ago. It is a wonderful foray into a different, exotic world that many have forgotten and the author, illustrator and team allow us to see. This is steampunk at its best.

    GOOD!

The book was great but it did have a lot of violance but it still was an awsome book. I highly recomend it. Especially iy you like Dracula, 20,000 leagues under the sea, the strange case of dr.jeykll and mr.hyde, the invisible man and Alan Quatormain.

    A reviewer

There are few pleasures in life like those experienced when you find yourself overjoyed by something that could have been a tremendous disappointment. Alan Moore is a creative master and has continued this 'extraordinary' saga in the best way possible. If you are entertained by bizarre nudity, outlandish creatures, or three-dimensional thrills then pick this one up!

What is this? This isn't a book!

The main character was not Mina. The Mina from Dracula was much, much different. The whole books seemed like a piece of FanFiction, and Mina was excessively OOC. 'Out of Character' There was so much blood and violence that it made me sick. There were also times when the characters spoke in different languages, which confused me, since I don't read/speak Arabic. The violence, nudity, and racism were awful. Spare yourself. Don't read this. Watch the movie. It was actually very good.

    the league of extaordinary gentlemen

As a fan of Victorian age literature and comic books, this graphic novel falls directly under the category. It was one of the best I've read yet. yet it lacked one of my favorite characters Sherlock Holmes.

    Disturbing, yet oddly interesting

This book is hard to put down. You will read it even as you curl your lip up in revulsion at the actions of some of the characters. It's images will disturb you, but there is just something about the book that will make you read it again. The book stays very true to the original characters of the literary world. It is nothing like the movie version, which is a children's fairy tale in comparison. The book forces us to see things as they would be, if there had been super-heroes in the past.

    Literary mayhem

I hate violence. So why, why, why do I LOVE this book? I love it because it has some of the greatest literary characters of the Victorian age meeting each other, while remaining true to their original natures. There is humor and sly satire, and great imagination. I am now eagerly awaiting Vol. 2.

    Brilliant! Simply Brilliant.

Take the characters of Jules Verne, Robert Louis Stevenson, Bram Stoker, Edgar Allen Poe, Arthur Conan Doyle and H. G. Wells roll them up and have them told by one of the darker graphic novelists and you have The League of Extrodinary Gentlemen. Run - do not walk - to either your comic book shop or look on the web for it. This graphic novel, actually a collection of a six issue limited series, takes place at the tale end of the 19th century. The English Government has need of a special force to be headed by the mysterious Wilemina Murray. She is charged by a man who goes by the initial "M" with assembling the legends of that era: Captain Nemo, Alan Quatermain, Dr. Henry Jekyll (with Mr. Edward Hyde), and Hawley Griffin to make the League of Extrordinary Gentlemen. Alan Moore uses his dark wit to craft this thoroughly enjoyable and wonderfully worked out graphic novel in the tradition of The Watchmen and "V" for Vendetta. I can not recommend this highly enough.
