Overview

Leahy's the name and fiddling's the game of this popular Canadian Celtic group. The Leahy family is represented here by eight musicians and showcases brother Donnell, undoubtedly one of the world's great bow wranglers. Backed by piano and keyboards, drums, bass, guitar and mandolin, step dancing, and still more fiddles, Donnell accelerates through medleys of Celtic reels and jigs, setting new records for speed. The American fiddling tradition is featured on the saucy "Alabama," while Donnell digs into his gypsy roots for the fiery Hungarian "Czardas." LEAHY is a real toe-tapper, with moments of repose for a lament or two.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Greg Prato
By combining traditional Celtic music with country and a spectacular live act, Canada's Leahy drew rave reviews, and their self-titled debut is the closest you can get to the excitement of a Leahy concert. The two best tracks are undoubtedly "The Call to Dance" and "B Minor," which both have accompanying videos as well. The former starts quiet and slow, eventually becoming a full-blown dance tune, while the latter is the album's leadoff track and serves as a fine introduction to Leahy (foot-stomping rhythms, swirling fiddles, piano flourishes, etc.). Other highlights include "Czardas," a Hungarian dance tune that is a showcase for the talents of fiddler Donnell, and "Alabama," which creates a wonderful, festive atmosphere. Leahy's self-titled debut is a must-have for fans of expertly crafted -- and played -- world music.

THis CD was great! I'm a big fan of Celtic music and a big fan of fiddling, and Leahy incorporates both of these. The tracks are mostly violin, but they have other instruments as well. A great choice for anyone who likes Celtic fiddling.
