Overview

When Amy trains for the Novice Canadian Figure Skating Championship she knows the stakes are high. If she does well, she's one step closer to the Olympics; if she doesn't, she's convinced her parents will stop paying for her skating lessons. One day in practice she falls, hard. Afraid she'll miss the championship, she doesn't tell her coach about the screaming pain in her right knee. As the day approaches, however, it gets worse and worse until it threatens to end her skating dreams. Leap of Faith shows the extremes to which competitive ambition can drive young athletes, and the consequences that follow.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Many young boys and girls today still dream of ice skating their way to the Olympics, the goal that pushes them to endure years of practice, sacrifices and injuries—and such is true of fourteen-year-old Amy. Like figure-eights, the story twists and circles around happenings in the lives of most young teens today—family, school, goals and the opposite sex, each of which shapes up crisply for the Canadian teen until she injures her ankle on the ice. It is then that Amy spins out of control by covering up the incident and suffering alone. What stops her downward spiral and makes her skate better than ever is her fear of re-injury on the ice. Taking off a tenth of a point because of the extent of Amy's deceit and lies, this judge gives author Bossley a 9.9. 2000, James Lorimar & Company Ltd, . Ages 8 to 13. Reviewer: Patricia Timbrook
