Overview

Unlike regular Tunisian crochet, Double-Ended Tunisian Crochet, you use a double-ended hook, and work from both ends of the hook. The technique section in this book introduces you to using the double-ended hook in flat projects then progresses to tubular, in-the-round projects. Once you learn to work in-the-round, you move to the next level with a mobius join. The new techniques used in the project section include several different looks and skill levels. Great step-by-step photos are included in the technique section as well as the Stitch Glossary. 8 great projects include Ribbed Headband, Rolled Brim Beanie, Diagonal Bias Cowl, Slouchy Hat, Cinched Cowl, Bling Mobius Wrap, Lace Mobius Wrap and a Diagonal Pullover.

Double-Ended Tunisian Worked in the Round (see page 5)

Beanie

Note:Since project is worked in the round, you will need to complete 2 or more "passes" of picking up lps in order to make it all the way around. The instructions state total number of sts for each rnd, but work is completed in sections in order to make it around (see page 5). Pulling up lps is always done with pumpkin, and closing lps is always done with variegated.

Note: When closing sts in 2 or more "passes," always remember to leave last 3 or 4 lps on hook to maintain stability of lps.

Note: Place st marker in first st; move marker up as work progresses.

Cowl

Note:Since Cowl is worked in the round, you will need to complete 2 or more "passes" of picking up lps in order to make it all the way around. The instructions state total number of sts for each rnd, but work is completed in sections in order to make it around (see page 5). Pulling up lps is always done with skein A, and closing lps is always done with skein B.

CHAPTER 4

Bling Moebius Wrap

Skill Level

** EASY

Finished Measurements

12½ inches wide x 52½ inches in circumference, crossed

Materials

• *Light (DK) weight acrylic/wool/payette yarn (3½ oz/263 yds/100g per skein):

2 skeins copper

• Size L/11/8mm double-ended crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge

• Size M/N-13/9mm crochet hook

• Tapestry needle

• Stitch marker

*Sample project was stitched with Universal Yarn Classic Shades Sequins Lite #404 copper nugget

Gauge

9 TSS = 4 inches

Pattern Notes

When using such a special yarn, allow the yarn to do the work and use only Tunisian Simple Stitch, which shows the beauty of the yarn. A larger hook is used to make a loose tension, allowing sequins to flow through more easily.

Both skeins of yarn are used on each row in the pattern. One is referred to as skein A, and the second is referred to as skein B.

Technique Used

Double-Ended Tunisian With a Moebius Join (see page 9)

Wrap

Note:Since Wrap is worked in the round, you will need to complete 2 or more "passes" of picking up lps in order to make it all the way around. The instructions state total number of sts for each rnd, but work is completed in sections in order to make it around (see page 9). Pulling up lps is always done with skein A, and closing lps is always done with skein B.

Rnd 1:

A: With skein A and double-ended hook, ch 130, sk first ch, *insert hook in next ch, yo, pull lp through, leaving lp on hook, rep from * across (130 lps on hook);

B: turn hook 180 degrees so back of work is facing, push lps to opposite end of hook, pull skein B through 1 lp on hook, with skein B, [yo, pull through 2 lps on hook] across.

Note: When closing sts in 2 or more "passes," always remember to leave last 3 or 4 sts on hook to maintain stability of lps.

Rnd 2:

A: Without twisting foundation ch, bring first st close to last st, then twist 1 short end 180 degrees (1 short end is now upside down), place st marker in foundation ch of first st of rnd, working in unused lps of foundation ch, pull up lps around (130 lps on hook);

B: turn hook 180 degrees (so back of work is facing), push lps to opposite end of hook, [yo, pull through 2 lps on hook] around.

Note: Since this project uses a moebius join, rem rnds are worked in a "figure eight" throughout. After rnd 3, it will appear that a total of 4 rnds have been worked. The foundation ch will be in center of work. A complete rnd will have been made when you reach st marker. Move marker up as work progresses. Or, alternatively, use a separate st marker to mark rnds, leaving first marker to mark beg join for easier counting.

Rnd 3:

A: TSS(see Stitch Glossary on page 31) around (260 lps on hook);

B: turn hook 180 degrees, push lps to opposite end of hook, [yo, pull through 2 lps on hook] around.

Rnds 4–16: Rep rnd 3.

Rnd 17: With skein A, sk first st, sl st as for TSS around. Fasten off both yarns.

Finishing

Weave in all ends securely, cutting any sequins out of loose strands before weaving them in with tapestry needle to make finishing easier. Block as desired.

CHAPTER 5

Lace Moebius Wrap

Skill Level

*** INTERMEDIATE

Finished Measurements

19 inches wide x 43½ inches in circumference (crossed)

Materials

• Plymouth Yarn Worsted Merino Superwash medium (worsted) weight merino superwash wool yarn (3½ oz/218 yds/100g per skein):

4 skeins #0018 lavender

• Size I/9/5.5mm double-ended crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge

• Size I/9/5.5mm crochet hook

• Tapestry needle

Gauge

In pattern: 9 sts = 4 inches; 9 rows = 4 inches

Pattern Notes

This is the most challenging project in the book. It uses a moebius join, solid color and a 6-stitch repeat. When picking up stitches, until you can establish the pattern and "read" the stitches, it's best to pick them up 6 at a time. If the double-ended technique here proves to be too much of a challenge, you can also stitch this in the same stitch pattern in regular Tunisian and sew the ends together.

Weave in ends as work progresses.

Special Stitch

Popcorn (pc): 5 dc in indicated st, remove lp from hook, insert hook in first dc made, pull lp through, ch 1 to secure.

Rnd 1:

A: With skein A and double-ended hook, ch 150, sk first ch, *insert hook in next ch, yo, pull lp through, leaving lp on hook, rep from * across (150 lps on hook);

B: turn hook 180 degrees so back of work is facing, push lps to opposite end of hook, pull skein B through 1 lp on hook, *ch 1, yo, pull through 4 lps on hook (cl made by closing 3 sts), ch 1, [yo, pull through 2 lps on hook] 3 times, rep from * across, until 1 lp rem on hook.

Note: When closing sts in 2 or more "passes," always remember to leave last 3 or 4 sts on hook to maintain stability of lps.

Rnd 2:

A: Without twisting foundation ch, bring first st close to last st, then twist 1 short end 180 degrees (1 short end is now upside down), place st marker on foundation ch of first st of rnd, working in unused lps of foundation ch, pull up lps around (150 lps on hook);

B: turn hook 180 degrees (so back of work is facing), push lps to opposite end of hook, *ch 1, cl(see Stitch Glossary on page 34), ch 1, [yo, pull through 2 lps on hook] 3 times, rep from * across, until 1 lp rem on hook.

Note: Since this is a moebius join, rem rnds will be worked in a "figure eight" throughout. After rnd 3, it will appear that a total of 4 rnds have been worked. The foundation chain will be in the center of work. A complete rnd will be made when you reach the st marker. Move marker up as work progresses. Or, alternatively, use a separate st marker to mark rnds, leaving first st marker to mark the beg join, for easier counting.
